SpongeBob Spin-Off Parodies Netflix’s Wednesday and Love Is Blind

Netflix recently announced some exciting news on their X (formerly Twitter) page, featuring creative posters that showcase Sandy Cheeks and SpongeBob SquarePants in a unique and fun manner. In these posters, Sandy is depicted as Wednesday, while SpongeBob appears as a contestant on Love Is Blind.

The posters come with catchy taglines: Sandy’s says, “From the deepest depths of Bikini Bottom,” and SpongeBob’s reads, “Love is absorbent. Falling in love is the squeezy part.” This announcement is the first in a series of SpongeBob character spin-off films, starting with “Saving Bikini Bottom: The Sandy Cheeks Movie,” which is set to release on Netflix on August 2.

Directed by Lisa Johnson, the film features the regular voice cast from the series, along with some new characters. It is a hybrid movie that combines CGI and live-action elements.

In this spin-off, Bikini Bottom is unexpectedly scooped out of the ocean, prompting Sandy Cheeks and SpongeBob SquarePants to travel to Sandy’s hometown in Texas. There, they meet Sandy’s family and work together to devise a plan to save their underwater city and its residents from the clutches of a nefarious CEO.

The film stars Carolyn Lawrence as Sandy Cheeks, Tom Kenny as SpongeBob SquarePants, Clancy Brown as Mr. Krabs, Bill Fagerbakke as Patrick, and Rodger Bumpass as Squidward. Newcomers to the cast include Johnny Knoxville as Randy Cheeks, Craig Robinson as Pa Cheeks, Grey DeLisle as Ma Cheeks, Ilia Isorelýs Paulino as Phoebe, Matty Cardarople as Kyle, and Wanda Sykes as Sue Nahmee.

Sandy Cheeks made her first appearance in the Nickelodeon series SpongeBob SquarePants in the episode “Tea at the Treedome” on May 1, 1999. Created by series creator and animator Stephen Hillenburg, who was also a marine biologist, Sandy is an anthropomorphic squirrel in a diving suit who resides with the other characters in Bikini Bottom. This year marks the 25th anniversary of the entire show.

Sandy is one of SpongeBob’s closest friends and is known for her Texan pride and Southern drawl. Inside her treedome, she usually wears a green and purple bikini, but when she ventures outside, she dons an atmospheric diving suit. When other characters visit her home, they wear water helmets to adapt to the dry environment.

Sandy is a scientist with a knack for creating complex inventions. She is also a tough, tomboyish character who practices karate, lifts weights, and excels as a rodeo champion. Although she is good friends with SpongeBob’s best friend, Patrick Star, she sometimes finds him annoying, much like Squidward does.

Originally, Sandy was pitched by Stephen Hillenburg and Tim Hill as SpongeBob’s love interest, but this concept was quickly revised.

Notably, “Saving Bikini Bottom: The Sandy Cheeks Movie” will be the first SpongeBob film not to be released in theaters. Instead, it will be available on a different streaming service, Netflix, as opposed to the usual Paramount+.

“Saving Bikini Bottom: The Sandy Cheeks Movie” is set to premiere on Netflix on August 2.
