St. James’s Park Selected for Queen Elizabeth II Memorial in London

On September 7, it was announced that the new memorial for Queen Elizabeth II will be situated in St. James’ Park, London. This decision was made public by the Queen Elizabeth Memorial Committee over the weekend.

The chosen location will encompass a portion of St. James’ Park adjacent to The Mall at Marlborough Gate, alongside a pathway that leads to a nearby lake and the Blue Bridge.

The memorial is set to be unveiled by April 21, 2026, coinciding with what would have been the Queen’s 100th birthday. Queen Elizabeth II passed away on September 8, 2022.

Prime Minister Keir Starmer emphasized that the legacy of Queen Elizabeth II, marked by her service and dedication to the nation, will always be remembered. In a statement, he remarked that St. James’ Park, located in the heart of the capital, will serve as a fitting tribute where people can honor the Queen and connect with the cherished collective history.

The site was selected for its proximity to Buckingham Palace and the memorials honoring the Queen’s parents, King George VI and Queen Mother Elizabeth.

The memorial aims to honor Queen Elizabeth II’s remarkable life and contributions to the United Kingdom while providing a serene space for visitors to pause and reflect, as stated by the committee in their announcement regarding the location.

The British government has pledged its support for the proposed memorial projects, welcoming financial contributions from England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland.

Later this year, the committee will begin soliciting design proposals from architects, artists, and designers who wish to contribute to this significant project.
