The Edmonton Oilers have made headlines with their latest announcement regarding star forward Leon Draisaitl. On Tuesday, the team revealed that Draisaitl has signed a monumental eight-year contract extension worth an astounding $112 million.

This contract, which will take effect starting in the 2025-26 season, boasts an average annual value of $14 million. This figure marks a new record in the NHL, surpassing the previous high set by Toronto Maple Leafs captain Auston Matthews at $13.25 million.

Connor McDavid, Draisaitl’s exceptional teammate, is currently under contract with a cap hit of $12.5 million. With Draisaitl’s deal now finalized, it’s anticipated that McDavid may surpass Draisaitl’s record when his contract comes up again after the 2025-26 season.

The justification for Draisaitl’s lucrative new contract is clear. He has consistently showcased his elite offensive skill set since he entered the league during the 2015-16 season. The former No. 3 overall pick has taken his game to new heights over the past six seasons.

Since the 2018-19 season, Draisaitl has ranked near the top in several crucial offensive categories:

Goals 272 2nd
Assists 371 3rd
Points 643 2nd
Power Play Goals 124 1st
Power Play Points 247 2nd

Notably, Draisaitl’s tally of 124 power play goals during this period is a remarkable 40 more than Steven Stamkos, the next closest player. Draisaitl has mastered the art of positioning himself at the goal line, delivering precision one-timers from challenging angles, which has solidified his status as a formidable force during power plays.

With Draisaitl now secured for the long term, the Oilers can focus on their ultimate goal: winning the Stanley Cup. Their recent journey concluded in heartbreak during the 2023-24 season’s Stanley Cup Final, where Draisaitl played a pivotal role, contributing 10 goals and 21 assists. Unfortunately, the team fell to the Florida Panthers in a decisive Game 7.

In preparation for their next bid for the championship, the Oilers have brought in notable players like Jeff Skinner and Viktor Arvidsson. With Draisaitl leading the charge, the team appears poised to take another significant shot at glory.
