Star university gymnast shot and killed; suspect is in custody

On September 1, reports confirmed the tragic death of decorated gymnast Kara Welsh, who was shot over the weekend following a confrontation involving a 23-year-old man. Authorities have released details surrounding the incident, stating that it occurred late Friday night in Whitewater, Wisconsin.

Kara Welsh, originally from Plainfield, Illinois, was a prominent figure in collegiate gymnastics, having won national championship titles and being recognized as a two-time All-American while competing for the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater. Her exceptional talent on the gymnastic floor had made her a beloved member of her team and the university community.

According to a statement from the Whitewater Police Department, officers responded to a report of a person suffering from a gunshot wound at an apartment in the 100 block of W. Whitewater Street shortly before midnight. Upon arrival, they discovered Welsh had sustained multiple gunshot wounds and was pronounced dead at the scene.

The altercation leading to the shooting involved Welsh and a 23-year-old man who was present at the apartment. The suspect has since been taken into custody and is being held at the Walworth County jail. He faces serious charges that include first-degree intentional homicide, endangering safety with a dangerous weapon, and disorderly conduct while armed.

In response to the tragic news, Chancellor Corey King of the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater expressed his condolences to students, faculty, and staff. “The news of Kara’s death is heartbreaking for our close-knit university community. This is a time when we are all called upon to support one another, to process, and to grieve,” King stated.

During a delicate time for Welsh’s family, the university is providing counseling services to the gymnastics team and coaching staff informed of her passing in person. King also announced that the campus flag would be lowered to half-staff in Welsh’s memory on Tuesday.

Kara Welsh achieved remarkable success during her gymnastics career; she earned the national vault title in 2023 and holds four of the top eight scores in the vault event in the history of her school’s gymnastics program, according to university sources.

Coach Jen Regan spoke highly of Welsh, stating, “To put into words the impact Kara had on the Warhawk community is impossible. A powerful athlete, dedicated teammate, and the light in everyone’s dark days, Kara truly lifted each and every one of us up during her time as a Warhawk gymnast. There are no words to describe the void we all feel in our hearts, but Kara’s legacy will live on through Warhawk gymnastics forever.”

The gymnastics community has come together to mourn the loss of Welsh. USA Gymnastics, the governing body for the sport in the U.S., conveyed its sympathies on social media, expressing, “We offer our deepest condolences to Kara’s family, friends, and teammates at @UWWGymnastics.”

The aftermath of this incident has cast a pall over the university and the wider gymnastics community, with many reflecting on Welsh’s significant contributions and the inspiration she provided to those around her. As investigations continue and processes unfold, the memory of Kara Welsh will undoubtedly resonate deeply within the hearts of those who knew her.
