PITTSBURGH (AP) — In a setback for the Pittsburgh Steelers, rookie right tackle Troy Fautanu has officially been ruled out for the upcoming game against the Los Angeles Chargers due to a knee injury.

Fautanu, selected 20th overall in this year’s draft, had a productive week of practice leading up to the game. However, the injury occurred during practice on Friday, which led to his initial questionable status on the injury report before he was downgraded to out on Saturday.

This would have been Fautanu’s second start in the NFL, as the Steelers prepare to face the Chargers with both teams currently holding a record of 2-0. The 23-year-old, who played college football at Washington, previously battled through a knee issue during training camp, but his performance had impressed head coach Mike Tomlin after he was cleared to practice earlier this month.

The absence of Fautanu will allow Broderick Jones to step back into the starting lineup. Jones, taken in the first round of the 2023 draft, was replaced by Fautanu in last week’s game against the Denver Broncos. While starting admirably in prior games, Jones struggled in that matchup, leading to his benching for the remainder of the contest after being penalized three times in just a short span during the second quarter.

Following that game, Coach Tomlin made it clear that he had not completely moved on from Jones. He acknowledged the situation as part of a competitive atmosphere within the team.

“I am sure (Jones) suffered some disappointment in terms of Troy starting,” Tomlin stated. “It’s a natural thing. But he has to move past it and I have to give him an opportunity to move past it as a leader.”

As the Steelers prepare for their matchup against the Chargers, the loss of Fautanu presents a challenge. The offensive line will undoubtedly rely on Jones to step up and perform effectively. His experience and growth will be pivotal as the Steelers aim to maintain their unbeaten record against a strong opponent.

This game holds considerable significance, both for Jones and the Steelers as a whole. It represents not just a chance to solidify their standing in the league but also an opportunity for Jones to redeem himself after a rough outing. His performance will play a critical role in determining the offensive dynamics of the team moving forward, especially without Fautanu on the field.

As the game day approaches, the Steelers will keep a close eye on how their revamped offensive line functions against the Chargers’ defense. Fautanu’s absence is a loss, but it also opens the door for Jones to regain confidence and prove that he can handle the responsibilities of a starting tackle.

If Jones can navigate through the early challenges and find his rhythm, it could lead to a more cohesive performance on offense, allowing the Steelers to exploit the Chargers’ weaknesses. Both the coaching staff and fans are looking forward to seeing how the team adapts in this situation.

In summary, the Steelers are gearing up for an intense clash against the Chargers without Troy Fautanu, who has established himself as a young talent deserving of a starting role. With Broderick Jones stepping in, all eyes will be on him to see if he can turn his earlier struggles into a solid performance that helps steer the team toward victory.
