Steve Martin notes Tim Walz resemblance, declines “SNL” offer

Steve Martin acknowledges his resemblance to Tim Walz but isn’t ready to take on the role of the Minnesota governor just yet.

Following Walz’s decision to join the Democratic ticket, social media buzzed with comparisons between the 60-year-old governor and Martin. Many speculated that the comedy legend might be the perfect choice to portray Walz on “Saturday Night Live.”

After Maya Rudolph agreed to reprise her Kamala Harris impression for SNL’s 50th season, more attention turned towards Martin for the role of Walz, especially given the upcoming November race coverage.

Martin addressed the comparison on Threads, humorously mentioning that he “just learned that Tim Walz wants to go on the road with Marty Short,” referencing his close relationship with his “Three Amigos” and “Only Murders In the Building” co-star.

On Wednesday, NBC’s Lorne Michaels noticed the chatter and reportedly extended an offer to Martin. However, as reported by the Los Angeles Times, Martin didn’t feel up to the task of embodying the school lunch-loving Minnesotan governor.

“I told Lorne, ‘I’m not an impressionist. You need someone who can really nail the guy.’ I got picked because I have gray hair and glasses,” said the Emmy Award winner.

Martin also expressed concerns about the commitment required for the role, stating that it’s an ongoing effort rather than a one-time performance. “It’s not like you do it once and get applause and never do it again. They need a real impressionist. They’re gonna find somebody really, really good. I’d be struggling,” he explained to the Times.

Casting for SNL’s 50th season, which begins in September, remains undecided, particularly for a Walz stand-in, should they decide not to use a current cast member. As it stands, at least two cast members are set to leave the show before the season starts.
