‘Superman’ Director James Gunn Reveals Skyler Gisondo as Jimmy Olsen

Superman filmmaker and DC studio chief James Gunn recently offered a sneak peek of Jimmy Olsen, portrayed by Skyler Gisondo, in his upcoming Warner Bros superhero movie. Gunn shared this on the anniversary of the character’s debut in comics back in 1941.

“Happy Anniversary to Superman’s pal, Jimmy Olsen, who debuted on this day in 1941 (although he did appear earlier as ‘office boy’ in Action Comics 6),” wrote Gunn. “Created by Jerry Siegel, Joe Shuster & Bob Maxwell. I can’t wait for you to see @SkylerGisondo’s portrayal in #Superman on July 11, 2025. @dcofficial @superman.”

Jimmy Olsen is a classic character in the Superman franchise. He is a young photojournalist working alongside Clark Kent aka Superman and Lois Lane at the Daily Planet. Skyler Gisondo, famous for his roles in “Licorice Pizza,” “Booksmart,” and “The Amazing Spider-Man” series, is collaborating with Gunn for the first time on this project.

In July, Gunn announced the completion of production on Superman, posting on Instagram, “I set out to make a movie about a good man in a world that isn’t always so much. The goodness and kindness and love I’ve encountered on set inspired me and pushed me forward when I felt too spent to move on my own. Thank you all from the bottom of my heart. It has been an honor.”

This new Superman film marks the first title in a revamped DC slate overseen by Gunn and Peter Safran. The story follows Superman as he tries to reconcile his Kryptonian heritage with his human upbringing. The hero remains an embodiment of truth, justice, and the American way, guided by human kindness in a world where such virtues can seem outdated.

Set for release in theaters on July 11, 2025, the film will feature Nicholas Hoult as the villain Lex Luthor. Other cast members include Nathan Fillion, Isabela Merced, Edi Gathegi, Anthony Carrigan, María Gabriela de Faría, Sara Sampaio, Wendell Pierce, and Beck Bennett, among others. Gunn directed the movie based on characters created by Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster, with Safran as the producer.
