‘Survivor’ Star Kim Johnson Passes Away at 79

“Survivor: Africa” star Kim Johnson has passed away, her family confirmed.

The sad news was shared by Kim’s daughter, Kerry Johnson Tichi, who revealed her mother’s death to People on Monday. Kerry fondly remembered her mother as “the coolest mom and grandmother in the world,” but didn’t disclose the cause of her death.

Kerry added, “Our mom leaves a legacy of strength, resilience, kindness, and generosity. She wore her rose-colored glasses right up until the end … We will miss her forever.”

Kim’s ‘Survivor’ costar Ethan Zohn also paid tribute to the late contestant. Ethan shared a heartfelt tribute on Instagram, expressing how blessed he was to have competed on the show with her. He mentioned he’d have a planters punch in her honor.

Kim is best known for her remarkable performance in the 2001 season of ‘Survivor.’ She finished in 2nd place, with Ethan ultimately becoming the Sole Survivor. Kim, who was 56 when she participated, was the oldest person to win the Final Immunity Challenge. She also holds the distinction of being the oldest female competitor to reach the Final Tribal Council.

This isn’t the first loss the ‘Survivor’ community has endured in 2024. Sonja Christopher, a contestant from Season 1, passed away in April at the age of 87. Kim, who was 79 years old, was eight years younger than Sonja.
