Swae Lee Electrifies with ‘LightsUp’ Performance

Hundreds of students gathered on HUB Lawn on Friday night for the Student Programming Association’s annual LightsUp concert. This event marked a vibrant start to the new semester with a night filled with dancing and celebration.

The evening began with student performers Swervo Staacks, Jaaye, and MB3 Brown setting the tone for a lively night. Attendees enjoyed various activities such as inflatables, a mechanical bull, a photo booth, airbrush T-shirts, and complimentary SPA swag.

As the night continued, strobe lights lit up the sky, and the crowd waved light-up foam sticks. Californian rapper Sage the Gemini took the stage, opening his set with songs like “Pull Up,” “Big Thing,” and “Tick Boom.” He also performed his rendition of Flo Rida’s “G.D.F.R” before concluding with his hit track “Gas Pedal.”

During a brief intermission, the DJ played popular hits, further energizing the sea of students and setting the stage for the headliner.

Around 9:30 p.m., Swae Lee took the stage, igniting the crowd with his 2020 hit “No Time.” The excitement was palpable as he shouted, “Shout out to my day ones at Penn State.”

Lee continued with “Come Get Her,” a hit from his rap duo Rae Sremmurd, leading the crowd in a chorus of “Penn State come get her, she’s dancing like a stripper.” He followed up with words of encouragement for the seniors, “You guys got this. Get those good grades.”

The concert continued with the hit “No Flex Zone,” keeping the momentum high. “If you came with your gang, I want you to swang,” Lee prompted, leading into his song “Swang.” The crowd was all in, raising their arms in unison to form an “X” as he transitioned to “My Ex.”

Some students formed mosh pits, maintaining a high energy level throughout the performance. Expressing his enthusiasm, Lee said, “I wish I went to school here,” before launching into “Reality Check.”

He gave shoutouts to different student groups, including those majoring in plant science and the stoners in the crowd, which naturally led to his performance of “Sativa.” Lee also delivered covers of well-known songs from other artists, engaging the audience further.

Lee then asked the audience, “Who’s seen the Spider-Man movie?” before performing “Annihilate” and “Sunflower” from the Oscar-winning animated film “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse.”

The highlight of the night came when the intro to “Black Beatles” played, triggering the iconic “Mannequin Challenge” where the crowd posed motionless until the beat dropped.

Swae Lee wrapped up his exhilarating performance with “Powerglide” around 10:30 p.m., sending students off with high spirits as they looked forward to the new semester.
