PARIS–Aug 13, 2024–

The Taiwan Pavilion at the Cultural Olympiad in Paris concluded its 15-day showcase on August 10, marking a historic moment with the achievement of Taiwanese boxer Lin Yu-ting. Lin made history by winning Taiwan’s first Olympic boxing gold medal in the women’s 57-kilogram featherweight division.

Nymphia Wind, a Taiwanese drag queen and RuPaul’s Drag Race winner, was visibly moved as Lin’s photo and gold medal announcement were displayed on the LED screen. Located in the Parc de la Villette, the pavilion was organized by Taiwan’s Ministry of Culture (MOC) and opened on July 27.

Over its run, the pavilion featured 24 performing arts groups with more than 120 members, aiming to showcase Taiwan’s values of “freedom, democracy and diversity” through various music, opera, dance, and visual performances.

The climax of the closing night was undoubtedly Lin’s victory announcement. Nymphia Wind, overwhelmed with emotion, lauded Lin’s accomplishment amid cheers and applause. She also took the moment to thank all Taiwanese athletes participating in the Paris Olympics.

Deputy Minister of Culture Sue Wang spoke to the audience, expressing heartfelt gratitude for the pavilion’s journey that encapsulated “surprise, tears, joy, friendship, gratitude, pride, and affection”. Wang stressed Taiwan’s resolve to be an active member of the international community, despite competing under the name “Chinese Taipei” due to pressure from China.

Taiwan’s representative in France, François Wu, also acknowledged those involved, remarking that “tonight is not a farewell. We will see each other again.” Wu highlighted the commendable support that made the pavilion an undeniable success.

Over its duration, the Taiwan Pavilion’s programme included 57 performances, reflecting the country’s vibrant cultural identity and global aspirations. The event was a significant manifestation of Taiwan’s cultural dynamism and international presence.
