Taking It One Step at a Time

Ryan Lochte recently shared his recovery progress after a life-threatening car accident that occurred ten months ago. The former Olympic swimmer, now 40, and his wife, Kayla Rae Reed, posted a video on Instagram detailing his journey towards recovery. Kayla, 33, praised her husband’s determination and resilience in the accompanying caption, stating, “Life’s setbacks may knock you down, but they set the stage for an even stronger comeback! This guy has been putting in the work one step at a time, literally! 🙏”.

In the video, Lochte is seen being wheeled into his home by his 7-year-old son, Caiden Zane. He is also shown making his way through a hospital room with the help of a walker as he relearns to walk after his severe leg injury.

Lochte also shared another clip of himself attempting to run through his neighborhood, albeit with a noticeable limp. He captioned this video, “Rome wasn’t built in a day! Every day, try and get better. Still a ways away. If you’re not trying to better yourself each day, then what’s the point? Happy hump day.”

In a July appearance on Kyle Mills’ podcast “Athletes Only,” recorded just a month after his accident, Lochte detailed the harrowing experience. He recounted that he was on his way to pick up his children from school when he accidentally collided with a parked trash truck in the middle of a busy street.

Witnesses to the incident, including his friends and other parents, tried to help him. Lochte remembered their reactions, saying, “They’re like, ‘He’s dead. He’s not breathing. He’s dead.’ Blood gushing from my head. Still have a couple of stitches in there. Broke my femur. Completely broke my femur in half. Totaled my car.”
