Taylor Swift Concert: A Fun, Affordable Alternative to Family Vacations

Taylor Swift concert
The author’s daughters declared the Taylor Swift concert the best day of their lives.

“I’m not spoiling my children; I’m making deposits of joy.” That’s the mantra I repeated as I clicked to purchase four tickets for Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour in Cardiff, Wales. These were the most affordable tickets for her European leg, which, despite being relatively cheap, still felt like a splurge. Taylor Swift’s tour has been a global booster for tourism, packing hotels and encouraging airlines to add flights. For us, it turned out to be the best family vacation ever.

The Swiftie Era ramped up in our house when my then 11-year-old twin daughters came back from summer camp as newly minted Taylor Swift fans. It turned into a real frenzy when they heard a friend received tickets to the Eras Tour in Liverpool as a birthday gift. My husband and I initially said it was impossible. The tickets were outrageously expensive, and we were already planning a summer trip to Southern California.

Things took a turn when more friends announced they were going to see Taylor Swift in various European cities. Suddenly, saying no was harder as the craze grew. One night, my daughter was devastated to learn her best friend was going to the concert in Madrid. Again, we explained how impractical it was to spend hundreds on tickets and travel to Europe for a concert.

Growing up, I was fortunate to have what I needed but couldn’t always have what I wanted. Some wishes were met while others weren’t, from a desired navy blazer with gold buttons to horse-riding lessons that eventually came true thanks to my mom. These memories made me realize how much I wanted to give this incredible experience to my daughters. After crunching the numbers, our planned California vacation, with costs piling up from flights, a rental car, Airbnb, and Disneyland, could easily be swapped for tickets to see Taylor Swift in Wales and a few nights with friends in London. So, the firm “no” became a “yes.”

We decided to surprise our twins on their 12th birthday. Calling them into the living room, we apologized for not being able to plan a big birthday party but handed them envelopes instead. As they opened the cards saying, “Pack your bags, we’re headed to see the Eras Tour,” their reaction was priceless—jaws dropped, screams erupted, and tears flowed. It was joy like I’d never seen.

In the weeks leading up to the concert, our apartment transformed into a bead bracelet factory. Dress shopping took up our days, even until the day before our flight. Upon arriving in Cardiff, the atmosphere was electric. Surrounded by fellow Swifties dressed in sequins and cowboy boots, my daughters were in their element.

We fully embraced the concert vibe as a family, dressing up with “13” temporary tattoos, rhinestones, pearls, and paper crowns. I wore a Miss Americana sash, and my husband proudly donned a “Heartbreak Prince” T-shirt. Inside the stadium, I saw dads of all ages sporting “Proud Swiftie Dad” pins and hats, fully involved in the spectacle.

For three and a half hours, my daughters sang along to every song, waving their arms in sheer delight. They got the royal treatment from fellow fans, trading bracelets and receiving compliments on their outfits. One of the locals next to us wasn’t aware of the bracelet trading tradition, so my daughters generously gifted her some of their own, making her night even more special.

As the concert ended, we got a special wave from Taylor Swift herself, making the night unforgettable. One daughter declared, “This is the greatest night of my life,” while the other jokingly lamented, “We have nothing left to live for.” I’ve never had more fun at a concert in my life. Taylor Swift’s energy and effervescence were contagious, making every moment magical for us all.

This wasn’t just a concert; it was a family vacation we’ll always cherish. We now share stories of managing a canceled train from Paddington Station, catching the last boat to Cardiff harbor, riding the big Ferris wheel, and trying Welsh rarebit for the first time. These memories are golden, moments of pure joy and togetherness that we’ll hold onto forever.
