At the upcoming Paralympics opening ceremony, two decorated athletes will proudly carry the flag for Team USA. Steve Serio and Nicky Nieves, both former gold medalists, were chosen for this prestigious role. The announcement was made on Friday by the American Olympic and Paralympic Committee.

Steve Serio has been a standout athlete, previously leading the U.S. wheelchair basketball team to victory in the last two Paralympic Games. Nicky Nieves also has an impressive history, having played a crucial role in Team USA’s first gold medal win in sitting volleyball during the 2016 games.

Expressing his emotions, Serio said, “I’m overwhelmed and honored. I never thought this would be something that I’d get to experience in my career. I want to say thank you to all the Team USA athletes.” His accolades include being a five-time world champion and serving as co-captain of the 2024 basketball team alongside Trevon Jenifer.

Nieves shared her thoughts as well, stating, “Being the flagbearer for Team USA means that all of my hard work was not in vain. I get to represent the country that made me who I am, with the best-of-the-best U.S. athletes by my side.” Her passion for representing her country shines through, marking a significant moment in her athletic journey.

The opening ceremony for the Paris Paralympics is set to take place across the iconic Place de la Concorde and the Champs-Élysées on Wednesday. As part of this occasion, the flagbearers were selected through a voting process among American Paralympic athletes.

Team USA will be well-represented with a delegation of 225 athletes and guides competing in various events, showcasing the dedication and talent of American athletes on the world stage.

This year’s Paralympic Games promise to be a remarkable showcase of athletic excellence and inspiring stories, with Serio and Nieves leading the way as symbols of hope and perseverance for many.
