Tech Execs from Google, Netflix, and OpenAI Hosting Fundraiser for Kamala Harris

  • Executives from Google, Netflix, and OpenAI are throwing a fundraiser for Kamala Harris.
  • The event will take place August 27 in Washington, DC.
  • The reception will feature guest speakers who advised the vice president in the White House.

For weeks, it looked like the tech industry was leaning towards supporting Donald Trump in the upcoming election, with prominent investors in Silicon Valley expressing their backing for him. However, recent developments indicate that Kamala Harris still has her supporters in high-tech circles.

It all began when LinkedIn co-founder Reid Hoffman publicly declared his support for Harris on the same day Joe Biden ended his campaign. Additionally, Netflix co-founder Reed Hastings contributed a hefty $7 million to her campaign funds last week. On Wednesday, a website called VCs for Kamala launched, featuring over a hundred venture capitalists who pledged to vote and gather donations for the vice president.

Now, a group of executives from Google, Netflix, and OpenAI has come together to host a fundraiser for Harris in Washington, DC, later this month.

The fundraiser is scheduled for August 27 and will include special guests such as Josh Hsu, who served as Harris’s chief legal adviser in the White House, and Rohini Kosoglu, who was a domestic policy advisor to her. According to the fundraiser’s website, the cost of admission starts at $500, with ticket prices going up to $6,600.

The hosting committee includes executives from Google, Netflix, and OpenAI, who are involved in policy roles. There are also high-ranking employees from JPMorgan, McKinsey & Company, and the Omidyar Network, a foundation and impact investing fund established by eBay founder Pierre Omidyar. As of Friday, representatives from Netflix and OpenAI had not responded to requests for comment, while a Google spokesperson declined to comment.

The Harris campaign has posted impressive fundraising numbers for July, fueled in part by rising enthusiasm among Gen Z and millennial donors. The campaign announced that it had collected $310 million in July, boosting Harris’s total war chest to $377 million.
