Teddy Swims Trusts His Gut: It’s the ‘Only Thing That Has Your Back’

As Jaten Dimsdale was beginning his journey as Teddy Swims, an old friend offered him some invaluable advice: trust your gut instincts.

During a backstage chat with Rolling Stone ‘s Delisa Shannon at Lollapalooza, Swims recounted his friend’s words: “If you could tell me one time in your life that your gut has ever been wrong, I’ll shut up.” Reflecting on this, Swims couldn’t recall a single instance when his gut feeling had led him astray.

“From that moment on, I began listening to my gut,” said the singer-songwriter from Georgia. “Whenever I feel something deeply, I act on it immediately. I discuss things as they happen; I don’t bottle things up. I just trust my gut. That’s all you can do.”

Lightening the mood, he placed his hands on his stomach and added, “This is the only thing that has your back.”

Swims also opened up about the difficult relationship experiences that inspired his hit 2023 single “Lose Control”. He discussed reaching a point in his career where he felt comfortable being vulnerable, yet also knowing when to draw the line.

“I try to move as honestly and openly as I can,” he shared. “I think that attracts people who are willing to do the same or accept you as you are. I’m not perfect. There are, of course, things you need to keep to yourself, but I strive for honesty. I feel incredibly fortunate to have this opportunity, this job, and a platform to share my thoughts, and to have people let me know I’m not alone. The more honest I am, the more honest the world around me becomes.”
