The TikTok account for Monica and Robbin (@monicapilialohavegas) showcases a unique way to get telemarketers to hang up—by incessantly praising Jesus into the phone.

The video posted to their TikTok account has garnered over 889,000 views and a lot of praise for the content creator’s comedic skills and singing ability.

“When you get tired of telemarketers … just Praise the Lord till they quit calling,” reads the text overlay on the video as the content creator speaks into her phone’s speaker.

The telemarketer on the other end asks how her day is going. In the time it takes for the solicitor to introduce themselves, the TikTok user says “Praise the Lord” twice.

“Mhmm,” says the person on the other end. “Hello?” the TikToker asks.

“I’m calling to let you know the government is giving—”

The TikToker interrupts with another “Praise the Lord,” while the caller talks about money being offered by the federal government to help folks “pay [their] bills without any cost to [them].”

She nods her head, saying “OK,” and adds another “Praise the Lord.”

The caller attempts to confirm her eligibility, but the TikToker keeps up her holy refrain, this time with different intonations. “Yes, God, praise you JESUS thank you Lord! Praise you, hallelujah. Praise God,” she states into the phone.

You can almost picture the type of panic the telemarketer is going through as they try to stick to their script, while the TikTok user continues repeating “Praise the Lord” punctuated with “Hallelujahs.”

“Glory, glory, glory … I think of the goodness of Jesus and all that he’s done for me. My soul cries out, Hallelujah. And I thank Go-o-o-o-d,” she sings like she’s part of a holy tabernacle choir.

This appears to be the breaking point for the telemarketer who ultimately hangs up. The TikToker then laughs into the camera as she rocks back and forth on the couch.

Several other users on the app enjoyed this approach. One person wrote that they, too, will adopt this strategy whenever they receive solicitation calls: “I can confirm that I will be doing this for the rest of my life when a telemarketer calls me.”

Others commented that the telemarketer’s reaction betrayed their true nature: “That ‘EMM’ was loud. The devil doesn’t like when you give the man upstairs praise. I have to start doing this.”

Another TikTok user stated that religious zealotry worked for them as well, but it doesn’t require as much effort: “I answer the phone and say, ‘Hello, how can I pray for you today?’ Silence. Phone hangs up. works every time and certainly not all that.”

Someone else commented on imagining the telemarketer’s reaction on the other end of the line: “When you started singing girl, it took me outtttttttt thinking about being the lady on the other line, there’s no way I could’ve kept it together.”

People have dealt with telemarketers in various ways, one famous example being Tom Mabe’s prank that went viral in 2009.

After answering the phone and hearing a telemarketer, Tom pretends the caller has reached a murder scene. He then grills the caller, asking about their relationship with Tom.

The telemarketer tries to end the call, but Tom’s hard-nosed detective persona keeps him on for further pranks.

What are some of your favorite ways to mess with telemarketers?
