Texas Deputy Shot Dead While Commuting in Houston; Suspect in Custody

A Texas deputy constable was tragically shot and killed while driving to work in Houston on Tuesday afternoon. The shooting occurred at an intersection around 12:30 p.m., prompting an immediate response from law enforcement. Police have since detained a person of interest in connection with the case.

The deputy, identified as Maher Husseini, was in his SUV and had stopped at an intersection when the assailant approached his vehicle and opened fire. Houston Police Chief J. Noe Diaz reported that multiple shots were fired at Husseini, who was not in uniform at the time of the incident.

Deputy Husseini joined the Harris County Precinct 4 Constable’s Office in 2021 and had been assigned to patrolling the South-Central District. Harris County Constable Mark Herman expressed condolences on social media, acknowledging Husseini’s commitment to public service.

Authorities reported that a person of interest was taken into custody in Galveston, approximately 50 miles southeast of Houston. However, details surrounding the arrest have not been disclosed. The police had previously identified the suspect as a man between 35 to 40 years old, with dark, thinning hair, wearing dark clothing. He was driving a charcoal gray Chevy Impala, which had a distinctive bumper disfigurement.

As the investigation continues, detectives are working to establish a motive for the shooting. They are looking into whether the incident could have stemmed from road rage or if the deputy was deliberately targeted.

Houston Police Chief Diaz described the death of Deputy Husseini as a profound loss for the community. “It’s an awful thing for the community, for someone to lose their life, someone that’s dedicated their life to public service,” he said. “It is absolutely tragic.”

In a poignant statement, Constable Herman noted the significant impact of Husseini’s murder on both the precinct and the greater community. He confirmed that Husseini was transported to a Houston hospital, where he was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.

This incident has reverberated throughout the community, prompting reactions of shock and sadness. Local leaders and law enforcement officials have called for solidarity and support for the family of the fallen deputy during this challenging time.

The investigation remains ongoing as authorities seek justice for Deputy Husseini and his family, underscoring a collective commitment to addressing violence against those who serve to protect the community.
