The #2 Apple TV+ Show Is a 1960s Crime Thriller Starring My Favorite Actor

If you love a good period piece, there’s a new series on Apple TV+ that you shouldn’t miss: the limited drama series Lady in the Lake. Admittedly, starting new shows can be a gamble since many are prematurely canceled, leaving viewers hanging. However, my friend convinced me to give this Natalie Portman crime thriller a try, and I’m already hooked, thanks to its engaging storyline and compelling performances.

The greatest advantage is that being a limited series, this show promises a real conclusion. Here are three reasons why you should consider binge-watching Lady in the Lake.

For those unfamiliar, Lady in the Lake is adapted from Laura Lippman’s 2019 novel set in 1960s Baltimore. It follows an investigative journalist obsessed with solving the murders of 11-year-old Tessie Durst and bartender Cleo Johnson. Beyond the intriguing plot, the show also delves into the racial, social, and gender dynamics of the era. The story unfolds in 1966, capturing the tail end of the Civil Rights Movement and significant milestones in women’s rights such as the Griswold v. Connecticut Supreme Court ruling that prevented limiting women’s access to birth control.

One of the show’s standout features is its accurate mid-1960s visual experience. From the Diana Ross and the Supremes-inspired hairstyles to the hippie fashion emerging in the latter part of the decade, the attention to period detail enhances the viewing experience. Even the Volkswagen car models and interior and exterior house designs accurately reflect the era, contributing to the show’s authenticity.

Natalie Portman shines in her small-screen debut, brilliantly navigating the intense process of uncovering the grisly details of the crimes she’s investigating. Moses Ingram, portraying the murdered bartender Cleo Johnson, also delivers a notable performance. Playing a character who is primarily “dead” is challenging, but Ingram’s portrayal adds depth and realism to the series. Her work here will likely garner recognition during award season. Previously, Ingram was best known for her role as Jolene in Netflix’s The Queen’s Gambit.

The performances of Portman and Ingram are so captivating that you’ll find yourself glued to the screen, eager to discover what happens next.

Lady in the Lake is now available for streaming on Apple TV+.
