The #3 Netflix Show Is a Gritty Thriller by George R.R. Martin with 2 Seasons

While American Murder: Laci Peterson maintains its grip on the number one spot on Netflix’s top ten shows list for the second consecutive week, a new psychological thriller has made its debut on the platform, swiftly climbing to the third spot in the rankings.

Produced by Robert Redford (known for Prime Video’s Jack Ryan) and George R.R. Martin, the mind behind Game of Thrones and House of the Dragon, Dark Winds is based on the “Leaphorn & Chee” book series by Tony Hillerman. The show follows Lieutenant Joe Leaphorn and his Navajo Tribe Police as they investigate a series of crimes within their community.

Before finding its new home on Netflix, the series originally premiered on AMC on June 12, 2022. Dark Winds has not only captured the interest of Netflix users but also received rave reviews from critics. It boasts a perfect 100 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes and holds a 7.7 out of 10 on IMDb.

This neo-Western drama distinguishes itself from other crime thrillers by featuring a predominantly Indigenous cast. New talents like Jessica Matten (Bernadette Manuelito), Zahn McClarnon (Joe Leaphorn), Kiowa Gordon (Jim Chee), and Deanna Taushi Allison (Emma Leaphorn) play pivotal roles. Additionally, the show features cameo appearances from well-known stars, including The Office alum Rainn Wilson, who steps in as “Devoted Dan.”

In June 2022, Dark Winds director Chris Eyre sat down with Digital Trends to discuss his experience working with George R.R. Martin. “George [R.R. Martin] and Bob are both legends, and they just want to see good stories being told. They want to support the Native American community and the vision that we had. The irony is that I sat there with George and Bob one day when we didn’t have a home for the show, despite their involvement,” Eyre recounted.

He continued, “As we were debating what to do next, George said, ‘This is a tough industry,’ shaking his head. This is the guy who created Game of Thrones saying that. And Bob replied, ‘You’re damn right it’s a tough industry.’ You could hear the decades of experience in that sentence. ‘You’re damn right.’”

The first two seasons of Dark Winds are now streaming on Netflix. Happy binge-watching!
