The third episode of Welcome Back, Kotter featured a subtle moment that went unnoticed for years. A few minutes into the episode, a woman is shown completely naked in front of the camera. Gabe Kaplan’s character enters the room to meet the Sweathogs for the first time. Some students are seen ogling at a magazine centerfold, which the camera briefly shows before focusing back on Kaplan.

Surprisingly, this brief scene of nudity was left uncut and went unnoticed for a long time. It is likely that neither the censorship bodies nor the show’s creators caught this moment. With the advent of streaming websites, fans were eventually able to pause and replay scenes, leading to this discovery.

Although Welcome Back, Kotter did not carry strict age restrictions, it tackled serious social issues like teenage pregnancy, sexism, classism, and vices such as smoking through humor. The show quickly made John Travolta a favorite among young viewers.

One notable episode in its fourth season, titled “X-Rated Education,” specifically focused on pornography. It featured Charles Fleischer’s character, Carvelli, who planned to show an adult film to his friends. Meanwhile, Marcia Strassman’s character, Julie, was preparing to educate parents about sex through an educational movie. In a twist of events, the tapes got switched.

Interestingly, some actors did not have fond memories of their time on the set. Marcia Strassman, in particular, was very vocal about her experience, citing her difficulties in getting along with Gabe Kaplan. She even admitted to praying for the show’s cancellation. This feud between Marcia and Gabe also caused a rift among the cast members.

Welcome Back, Kotter aired for four years and produced 95 episodes before being discontinued in 1979 due to declining ratings. There was no definitive conclusion or graduation for the Sweathog students in the final episodes. The show ended addressing a minor plot point involving Lawrence Hilton-Jacobs’s character, Washington, who secured a job meant for Epstein, causing tension.
