The seventh episode of Star Wars: The Acolyte, titled “Choice,” premiered on Disney+ this week, unveiling some surprising revelations. Fans finally discovered the truth about the events on Brendok 16 years ago and learned more about the backstory of Mae and Osha, portrayed by Amandla Stenberg. In a previous episode, Mother Aniseya, played by Jodie Turner-Smith, was revealed to have created the twins using the Force. However, this episode adds an intriguing twist to their origin.

It is shown that a vergence, a unique concentration of Force energy, was used to divide one consciousness into two, making Mae and Osha more than conventional twins. In a recent press roundtable, The Acolyte creator Leslye Headland discussed the intricate connection between the twins and their unexpected origin.

When asked by Screen Rant about Mae and Osha’s symbiotic relationship, Headland provided intriguing insights. “I would say I would leave that up to future chapters of the story,” she hinted when asked if the twins could survive apart. She explained that Mother Aniseya’s powers, although potent, are somewhat unpredictable. Aniseya’s intention was to create life, but the result was the creation of two lives from one.

Headland elaborated, “Her intention, and the reason the Coven is fixated on keeping the twins together, is the belief that this unique miracle could be compromised if the twins are separated.” Despite their long separation in the storyline, Headland mentioned it seems unlikely that one would perish if the other faced harm. Yet, their divided essence leaves them incomplete without each other.

She noted that others often perceive the twins as unique or different. This perception aligns with how the Jedi understand their creation, making the twins more than mere halves of a whole. The twins’ presence adds depth to the narrative, highlighting familial connections and the unpredictable nature of the Force.

Darth Plagueis’ influence in the Star Wars universe is a well-known aspect due to Palpatine’s reference to him in Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith. Plagueis’ ability to manipulate midi-chlorians to create life and conquer death plays into the discussion of the twins’ creation. Headland compares the concept to real-world scientific pursuits, drawing a parallel to the events depicted in Oppenheimer.

When asked if the twins’ abilities were linked to Darth Plagueis, Headland responded affirmatively, expressing surprise that more fans hadn’t speculated about this connection. She likened the Sith’s quest for ultimate power to the search for an atomic bomb. The Sith aim to discover a Force power beyond the Jedi’s reach, entering an unseen arms race with the Jedi oblivious to its existence.

Stay tuned for more insights from Leslye Headland in future discussions. The season finale of Star Wars: The Acolyte is slated to drop on Disney+ on July 16th.
