‘The Bear’ Aims to Extend 4-Year Emmy Winning Duo Trend – GoldDerby

“The Bear” stars Jeremy Allen White and Ebon Moss-Bachrach are strong frontrunners to secure their second consecutive Best Comedy Actor and Best Comedy Supporting Actor Emmys next month. This potential victory continues a notable trend: five continuous years of male comedy acting awards going to the same show.

In 2018, “Barry” swept the categories with Bill Hader and Henry Winkler, 14 years after “Frasier” last achieved a similar feat with Kelsey Grammer and David Hyde Pierce. Coincidentally, in the same year, “Sex and the City” saw Sarah Jessica Parker and Cynthia Nixon win, mirroring this pattern on the female side. The next year, while Hader defended his title, Winkler lost the supporting award to Tony Shalhoub from “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel.”

In 2020, “Schitt’s Creek” made history by winning all seven major categories, including acting awards for Eugene and Dan Levy. The following two years saw “Ted Lasso” dominate with victories for Jason Sudeikis and Brett Goldstein, although their three-peat attempt failed last year when White and Moss-Bachrach triumphed.

Most of these shows also won Best Comedy Series with “Barry” being the exception, losing to “Maisel.” “Schitt’s Creek” additionally secured acting wins for Catherine O’Hara and Annie Murphy. In 2021, “Ted Lasso” won Best Comedy Supporting Actress for Hannah Waddingham, and last year, “The Bear” took the same category for Ayo Edebiri, who is now competing in the lead category.

It’s clear that being in a leading series pays off. Despite branch-specific voting for winners, the overwhelming number of shows means voters often gravitate towards the most visible and buzz-worthy contenders. The recent reintroduction of the restricted ballot further proved this by impacting the expected nominees from favorites like “The Bear” and “Shōgun,” though not the winner voting process.

“The Bear” is expected to repeat its Best Comedy Series win after its strong performance at the winter awards. However, the mixed reactions to its third season may not provide the same Emmy boost that Season 2 gave to Season 1. This could potentially open the door for “Hacks,” which is currently positioned as a strong contender. Jean Smart and Hannah Einbinder are frontrunners for Best Comedy Actress and Best Comedy Supporting Actress, respectively, which means “Hacks” might continue the trend of winning acting pairs, much like “Maisel” did to “Barry.”

As the Emmy race heats up, the odds seem to favor the series with higher visibility and momentum. Keeping an eye on these trends may offer insights into future winners and continue to shape the landscape of television comedy.
