‘The Boys’ Will End After Season 5, Confirms Showrunner

The complete Season 4 of The Boys is now available on Amazon Prime Video. The eight-episode season premiered on June 13th and concluded on July 18th. Fans who have already binged the entire season are now curious about the show’s future. The good news is that The Boys will return for a fifth season, but creator Eric Kripke has confirmed it will also be its last.

Amazon Prime Video renewed The Boys for a fifth season on May 14th, just a month before the fourth season’s premiere. However, the joyful news comes with a tinge of sadness, as it was announced that the fifth season will be the final chapter of the series.

On July 11th, two days before the release of the Season 4 finale, Kripke shared on X (formerly Twitter) that the R-rated satirical drama will wrap up with its fifth season. "#TheBoys Season 4 Premiere Week is a good time to announce: Season 5 will be the Final Season!" Kripke posted, along with a screenshot of a redacted script for the Season 4 finale titled Assassination Run.

The revelation that Season 5 would be the last was not entirely unexpected. Kripke had previously mentioned in interviews that he envisioned the story spanning at least five seasons. Speaking to Variety last year, Kripke disclosed that he had decided on a five-season arc around the beginning of writing Season 3, adding that it took some time for Amazon to approve and finalize the plan.

Kripke explained why he chose to announce the show’s conclusion now, stating, "It’s weird for this show to say, but it’s a slightly more introspective season. We always look at it in the three-act movie way as the end of Act 2 low point before the roller coaster ride of the climax. And I just wanted people to understand where it fits into the larger piece so that they kind of get what this season is supposed to be."

Season 5 of The Boys does not yet have an official release date. However, based on Kripke’s recent comments about the production schedule, a summer or fall 2026 premiere is likely. Kripke mentioned to Variety that the show’s final season will begin filming in November 2024 and continue until mid-2025. Like the previous seasons, Season 5 will comprise eight episodes.

Even though the main series is ending, the The Boys universe will continue to grow. The spinoff series Gen V has already been renewed for a second season, and another spinoff, The Boys: Mexico, is currently in development. Kripke has expressed his desire to be involved in these new projects in an advisory capacity to maintain the integrity of the universe he has created.

The Boys is based on the bestselling comic by Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson. It follows a group of vigilantes who aim to take down "Supes," corrupt superheroes who abuse their powers. Season 4 featured returning cast members Karl Urban (Butcher), Jack Quaid (Hughie), Antony Starr (Homelander), Erin Moriarty (Starlight), Jessie T. Usher (A-Train), Laz Alonso (M.M.), Chace Crawford (The Deep), Tomer Capone (Frenchie), and Karen Fukuhara (Kimiko). Newcomers in the latest season included Rosemarie DeWitt, Rob Benedict, Elliot Knight, Susan Heyward, Valorie Curry, Cameron Crovetti, and Jeffrey Dean Morgan.

According to the show’s Season 4 synopsis, "The world is on the brink. Victoria Neuman (Claudia Doumit) is closer than ever to the Oval Office—and Butcher, who has only months to live, has lost Becca’s son as well as his job as The Boys’ leader. The team is fed up with his lies—but with the stakes higher than ever, they have to find a way to work together and save the world."

Fans got a sneak peek of Season 4 with an official trailer and are now eagerly awaiting more information about the upcoming final season, which promises to bring the series to a "gory, epic, moist climax," as Kripke puts it.
