‘The Grand Tour’ Producer Promises Emotional Final Episode from Clarkson, Hammond & May

Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond, and James May are planning to leave Amazon Prime Video quietly, according to The Grand Tour’s executive producer.

Andy Wilman, the show’s executive producer, said the final episode featuring the Top Gear alumni will be an “unplugged,” emotional affair when it premieres on Amazon Prime Video on September 13.

Speaking at the Edinburgh TV Festival, Wilman explained, “They wanted to go a bit back to 2005 or 2006… leave the dynamite and just go [to Africa] with old, crappy cars.”

“Not much happens, I would say. Anyone expecting an Avengers: Endgame type of spectacle will be disappointed because it is deliberately gentle. But their camaraderie is next level,” he added.

The final road trip was filmed in Zimbabwe and Botswana, locations also featured in their first Top Gear special. Wilman noted that it’s a nostalgic journey with Clarkson, Hammond, and May reflecting on their 22-year relationship and envisioning future careers, humorously suggesting that Hammond might become a pantomime star.

“They say goodbye better than any presenters could ever say goodbye, because they’re so close. They can joke with each other and then get emotional as well. It’s quite weepy,” Wilman remarked.

A teaser for the finale was shown, featuring Clarkson telling the audience, “So for the last time, here we go.” Wilman added, “We are lucky, and Amazon has been really good about this, that they will celebrate our goodbye.”

While the presenters are concluding their eight-year run with Amazon, this is not the end of The Grand Tour. The streaming service plans to reinvent the show with Studio Lambert.
