Gena Rowlands, known for her iconic role in “The Notebook,” passed away at her California home on August 14, TMZ reports. She was 94 years old.

According to the report, her husband, Robert Forrest, and daughter Alexandra Cassavetes were with her when she passed. Her son, “The Notebook” director Nick Cassavetes, had also been at her home during the week.

Rowlands shared three children—Alexandra, Nick, and Zoe—with her first husband, John Cassavetes, who died in 1989. She married Robert Forrest in 2012.

The cause of death has not yet been determined. Her representative has been contacted for further comments.

Nick Cassavetes recently shared that his mother had been battling Alzheimer’s disease, a condition that her character in “The Notebook,” played by the older version of Rachel McAdams’ Allie, suffered from.

“I got my mom to play older Allie, and we spent a lot of time talking about Alzheimer’s and wanting to be authentic with it. And now, for the last five years, she’s had Alzheimer’s,” Nick told Entertainment Weekly. “She’s in full dementia. And it’s so crazy—we lived it, she acted it, and now it’s on us.”

Rowlands had an impressive acting career that spanned decades. Her last credited role was in 2017 for the short “Unfortunate Circumstances.” Besides her notable role in “The Notebook,” she also starred in memorable films such as “Hope Floats,” “The Skeleton Key,” “Paris, I Love You,” and “Something to Talk About.” In total, she had 106 acting credits to her name.
