They Discovered It Early, So I’m Going to Be Fine

“Boy Meets World” star Danielle Fishel recently shared on her “Pod Meets World” podcast that she has been diagnosed with breast cancer at the age of 43.

“I was recently diagnosed with DCIS, which stands for Ductal carcinoma in situ, which is a form of breast cancer,” Fishel revealed during the August 19 episode. “It’s very, very, very early, it’s technically stage zero.”

Fishel elaborated that her diagnosis was “high-grade DCIS with micro-invasion” and that she is planning to undergo surgery to have it removed.

“I’ve had to make a lot of decisions over the last couple of days,” she mentioned, adding that initially, she only intended to inform her close family and friends. Her first inclination was to “suffer in silence” and share the news only after she had conquered it. However, Fishel reconsidered after reading author Glennon Doyle’s views on the importance of seeking support during the struggle, not just after overcoming it.

Fishel caught the DCIS at such an early stage because she scheduled her annual mammogram appointment immediately upon receiving the reminder text.

“They found it so, so, so early that I’m going to be fine. So, I want to share this because I hope that it will encourage anyone to get in there,” Fishel expressed. “If it’s time for your appointment, if you’ve never had an appointment before, get in there. If you have to find out that you have cancer, find out when it’s at stage 0, if possible.”

She announced that she is consulting with multiple doctors, including oncologists, radiation specialists, and hormone therapists, to map out the next steps. Fishel reassured her listeners that she is confident she will be okay, though this might impact her work. She recently directed three episodes of NBC’s “Lopez vs. Lopez.”

Co-hosts Rider Strong and Will Friedle, who starred with Fishel in “Boy Meets World,” were among the first people she informed after her family.

“We love you, and you know that we’ve got you. Whatever you need, we’re here,” Friedle said. “You are going to be fine, and you might have some sucky days coming up, but we’re here for you.”
