This Pop Star Might Help Kamala Harris Win Over Gen-Z

Vice President Kamala Harris may not have secured the Democratic presidential nomination yet, but an endorsement from this summer’s viral pop sensation could significantly help her sway young voters.

Support from the left-wing political sphere was immediate after President Joe Biden announced he was dropping out of the 2024 presidential race on Sunday. However, the excitement about a potential Harris ticket hit a new peak when English singer Charli XCX weighed in online that evening.

Vouching for Harris with a nod to her latest studio album, “Brat,” the “365” singer took to X, formerly known as Twitter, to tell her 3.6 million followers, “Kamala IS brat.” This tweet reached over 30 million people by Monday afternoon.

Though the shout-out might have seemed cryptic to some, calling Harris a “brat” was one of the strongest endorsements for those familiar with the term. Parts of the internet have been flooded with “Brat” references since the album was released in June, leading many to dub this period “Brat Summer.”

Political insiders who understood the reference emphasized the significant influence Charli’s endorsement could have on young voters, many of whom felt disillusioned by the prospect of another Biden vs. Donald Trump rematch.

Gen-Z activist David Hogg joined the conversation, posting, “The amount this single tweet may have just done for the youth vote is not insignificant.” Commentator Yashar Ali also weighed in, telling his followers, “This is major.”

Team Harris warmly welcomed the endorsement on social media, updating the banner on her X account to mirror the minimalist text on “Brat’s” slime green album cover. The campaign account also promptly followed Charli XCX, who is known for her party girl persona.

While many buzzed over Charli’s apparent endorsement of Kamala Harris, others found themselves baffled by the online chatter. “I do not understand this even one little bit but I am receiving indications that it is good,” former Barack Obama staffer Patrick Dillon posted. The Bulwark’s Sarah Longwell simply asked, “What is Brat?”
