This Year’s Proms Begin with a Magical Female-Led Opener

It’s Proms season on BBC Two at 7pm. Clive Myrie kicks off eight enchanting weeks of classical music at the Royal Albert Hall. The BBC Symphony Orchestra will perform Beethoven’s 5th Symphony on the opening night. Conductor Elim Chan makes her debut at the Proms, and star soloist Isata Kanneh-Mason will shine while championing Clara Schumann’s piano concerto. Prepare for a captivating two-hour musical experience.

At 6pm on BBC Two, Gardeners’ World brings you to the RHS Flower Show Tatton Park in Cheshire, the largest horticultural event in northern England. Adam Frost and Frances Tophill immerse themselves in the event, seeking inspiration for small urban spaces and cost-effective gardening tips. Additionally, Toby Buckland explores the nearby Arley Hall.

Channel 4 at 8pm airs Lake District Rescue. Every year, the Lake District sees a proportion of its 18 million annual visitors underestimate its dangers. This series follows mountain rescuers as they respond to emergencies. In this episode, a broken leg prompts a race against time as night approaches.

ITV1 at 9pm presents Champions: Full Gallop, a documentary that delves into the world of horse racing. The series starts at the prestigious King George VI Chase at Kempton Park, Sunbury, on Boxing Day. Paul Nicholls, a 12-time winner, likens himself to Alex Ferguson of racing. However, an £800 horse from Ireland named Hewick might shake things up.

At 9pm on Channel 4, 8 Out of 10 Cats Does Countdown returns with more offbeat letter-arranging antics. This double bill of Jimmy Carr-hosted gameshows starts with Richard Ayoade and Katherine Ryan facing Jon Richardson and Dan Tiernan. Regulars Rachel Riley and Susie Dent oversee the proceedings.

Channel 5 at 9pm premieres Terror at 30,000 Feet, a new documentary series that taps into every nervous flyer’s fears. The first episode revisits a near-disaster on a British Airways flight from Gatwick to Kenya in 2000, where a passenger broke into the cockpit and wrestled with the pilots for control of the plane.
