Timothée Chalamet’s A24 Ping-Pong Film Receives Exciting Update

Get your paddles ready! Timothée Chalamet is set to star in Josh Safdie’s new movie centered around the world of ping-pong.

Last December, we reported that Chalamet hinted at a secret project he couldn’t discuss in detail. He did, however, reveal that it involved ping-pong. The mystery project is now unveiled as “Marty Supreme.”

According to Variety, Chalamet will not only star in but also produce the new film from A24. The movie is loosely inspired by the life of Marty Reisman, who began his journey as a hustler in Manhattan before rising to fame as a ping-pong champion. Reisman’s illustrious career saw him winning 22 significant sports titles between 1946 and 2002. Additionally, IndieWire notes that he made history by becoming the oldest player to win an open national competition in a racket sport during the United States National Hardbat Championship.

Reisman, known as the “wizard of table tennis,” combined his skills with humor, which even led to him performing for the Harlem Globetrotters.

Sadly, Reisman passed away in 2012, leaving behind a legacy in the world of ping-pong.

Safdie and Ronald Bronstein are behind the script for “Marty Supreme.” They will also produce the film along with Eli Bush and Anthony Katagas. This project reunites Safdie with A24, the studio that previously distributed “Uncut Gems” and “Good Time,” both directed by the Safdie brothers.

The Safdie brothers have since taken different creative paths following “Uncut Gems.” Benny Safdie decided against co-directing a sequel that would have starred Adam Sandler. Currently, the sequel is not in production.

Chalamet is an avid admirer of the Safdie brothers’ work. In a 2019 essay for Variety, he praised their body of work, writing, “The pair have continuously put out contemporary, raw and untethered work over the last decade, each film building on the traits of the prior, but never once sacrificing their innate grittiness.”

Chalamet’s schedule is bustling with projects. He recently scored a holiday hit with “Wonka,” released at the end of 2023, and starred in Dennis Villeneuve’s “Dune: Part Two.” Additionally, he just completed filming “A Complete Unknown,” a biopic about Bob Dylan directed by James Mangold.

Adding to his diverse portfolio, Chalamet collaborated with Martin Scorsese on a light-hearted project: a commercial for the fragrance Bleu de Chanel.

Recalling the experience with GQ, Chalamet said, “We were in Queens at four in the morning, and he was bounding up the subway stairs.”

He further reflected on working with Scorsese, particularly remembering a moment that showcased the legendary director’s openness to spontaneity. “For instance, like this camera slamming into my chest by accident,” Chalamet noted. “And that take being used in the spot now. It’s a lesson worth learning a thousand times, whether it’s as an actor or as a director or as a creative in general, that, you know, mistakes are your best friend, even when you’re Martin Scorsese.”

While “Marty Supreme” does not yet have a release date, rest assured that we’ll provide updates on this Timothée Chalamet film as more information becomes available.
