Tom Girardi Sentenced to 80 Years in Federal Prison Following Guilty Verdict

Tom Girardi is facing serious repercussions after being found guilty of embezzling over $15 million from his clients.

A press release from the United States Department of Justice, issued on August 27, states that Girardi, who is 85 years old, could be sentenced to a maximum of 20 years in federal prison for each of the four fraud counts against him. His sentencing is scheduled for December 6.

U.S. Attorney Martin Estrada remarked on Girardi’s deceptive practices, highlighting how he leveraged his celebrity status to mislead victims. Estrada described Girardi as a “Robin-Hood-in-reverse,” who robbed the vulnerable to finance a luxurious lifestyle. He emphasized that the recent verdict revealed Girardi’s true nature and the betrayal of those who trusted him.

According to the Justice Department, Girardi misappropriated millions from his law firm’s operational funds to cover personal expenses, including payments to his estranged wife Erika Jayne‘s company, EJ Global. His spending habits allegedly encompassed private jet travel, luxurious jewelry, high-end cars, and memberships to exclusive golf and social clubs.

Girardi’s legal troubles first came to light in November 2020, when Jayne, 53, announced their divorce after 21 years of marriage. Shortly after, both faced accusations of stealing funds meant for the families of victims from a tragic plane crash. However, Jayne was dismissed from the lawsuit in January 2022.

In early 2021, Girardi was indicted for embezzlement, facing five counts of wire fraud, to which he pleaded not guilty. Although he was the central figure in this legal crisis, Jayne wasn’t implicated in any criminal activities. The State of California disbarred Girardi in 2022 due to these serious allegations.

Before his trial, Girardi was diagnosed with late-onset Alzheimer’s disease and dementia in March 2021. His brother, Robert Girardi, assumed the role of conservator for both his person and estate. By August 2021, Girardi had moved into a senior living facility that specializes in memory care.

However, U.S. District Judge Josephine L. Stanton ruled that Girardi was competent to face trial despite his medical conditions.
