Top 10 Fights Between Liam and Noel Gallagher

After weeks of slowly intensifying rumors, it seems an Oasis reunion might be just around the corner. On Sunday, both Liam and Noel Gallagher, the famously feuding brothers without whom Oasis cannot exist, posted the group’s logo with Tuesday’s date and “8 am” (GMT) on social media.

While their arguments eventually became bitter, the brothers’ dynamic was often as entertaining as their music. One classic early dust-up during an interview was even released as a bootleg single. There’s no doubt that the friction between them was part of the band’s magic. With smash albums like their debut “Definitely Maybe,” “(What’s the Story) Morning Glory,” and hits like “Live Forever,” “Don’t Look Back in Anger,” and “Champagne Supernova,” their collective work has something their solo releases lack.

Oasis split up 15 years ago after Noel left the group he founded and for which he wrote most of the songs. Despite the buzz around the potential reunion, it doesn’t necessarily mean brotherly love is in the air. If you believe the UK’s Daily Mail, the brothers “have not buried the hatchet,” according to an unnamed source. However, the reported $530 million payday seems to outweigh any sibling grudge.

If this reunion is indeed happening, more battles are expected to come. But for now, let’s take a look at the top moments of the Gallagher brothers’ infamous spats.

It begins with a splash…
Noel is six years older than Liam, so pinpointing when their Manchester home first became a battlefield of arguments is tricky. The brothers had to share a bedroom, likely sparking early rivalry. In the 2016 documentary “Supersonic,” Liam recalled, “One night I come in pissed and I couldn’t find the light switch, so I pissed all over his new stereo. I think it basically boils down to that.”

“Wibbling Rivalry,” 1994
Oasis had barely released their first single before the brothers’ fighting nearly overshadowed their music. Their screaming battle during a 1994 NME interview became so legendary that it was released as a 14-minute-long single, “Wibbling Rivalry,” the following year. The argument devolved into a contest over which brother is more rock and roll, with both hurling colorful insults.

Tambourine tussle, Los Angeles, 1994
After the release of “Definitely Maybe,” the band played at Los Angeles’ Whisky a Go-Go. Liam taunted Noel in song, modified lyrics, and eventually hit him over the head with a tambourine, making fun of the audience and walking offstage. Noel quit the band but rejoined soon after.

Cricket-bat bust-up, Wales, 1995
During a session for “(What’s the Story) Morning Glory?,” a fight broke out after Liam brought strangers to the recording studio. Noel smashed a cricket bat over Liam’s head, which later got sold with a certificate of authenticity.

Brother Unplugged
After their massive shows at Knebworth Park in 1996, the band was set to record “MTV Unplugged.” Liam backed out due to laryngitis but showed up in the balcony heckling Noel. When Liam tried to join onstage for a re-recording, Noel told him to “piss off.”

Priorities…
During a 2002 interview, when Noel was informed of Liam getting into a fight and losing several teeth, his only concern was whether Liam could still sing.

Mind Control
In a 2005 interview with SPIN, Noel compared their relationship to “The Manchurian Candidate,” stating he could manipulate Liam like a game.

Fork in the Road
Before their final split in 2009, Noel described Liam as “the angriest man you’ll ever meet. He’s like a man with a fork in a world of soup.” Ten years later, Liam responded to Noel on Twitter with a video of himself eating soup with a fork.

High Flying … something
Ever since Noel started releasing records as Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds, Liam has been critical, calling the band “High Flying Turds” and posting photos of Noel with the caption “potato.”

In 2020, when Noel released a demo of Oasis’ “Don’t Stop…” without Liam’s vocals or guitarist Paul “Bonehead” Arthur’s work, Liam tweeted, “Oi tofu boy if your gonna release old demos make sure im singing on it and boneheads playing guitar on it if not it’s not worth a wank.”

The Rock and Roll Hall of… Bumbaclarts?
In 2024, despite a potential Rock and Roll Hall of Fame nomination, Liam wrote, “Fuck the Rock n Roll hall of fame its full of BUMBACLARTS,” before adding that Noel would probably go while he’d stay home.

If the reunion happens, we might have a whole new top 10 by the end of 2025.
