Top TV Shows Dominating Netflix, Apple TV+, Max, Hulu & More Right Now

One way you can gauge the popularity of a TV show is by observing the fan response when it concludes. If a show has a significant following, a disappointing finale often leads to uproar, as Netflix is currently experiencing with the fourth and final season of The Umbrella Academy. The series’ ending has left hardcore fans reeling. “Please spare a thought for your local Umbrella Academy fans this weekend,” one fan wrote on X/Twitter when the final season was released earlier this month.

“They’ve just suffered a Game of Thrones level catastrophe. Arguably worse.”

The reaction from fans has been swift and severe. Many are deeply invested in the series and waited two years after Season 3 for a resolution. Unfortunately, the final season felt rushed, with plotlines and story turns that didn’t do justice to the world they had grown to love. Characters made decisions that fans found completely unbelievable.

According to streaming search engine Reelgood, The Umbrella Academy is currently the number one show across all streaming platforms this week. This ranking isn’t due to viewer satisfaction with the final season, but rather the anticipation that had built up around it. However, that excitement quickly turned to disappointment. “So sad the umbrella academy was cancelled after season 3,” another fan lamented on X/Twitter.

The final season has a dismal 18% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, with a slightly better but still underwhelming 53% critics’ score. Reelgood, which monitors 20 million viewing decisions each month across platforms like Apple TV+, Max, Disney+, Hulu, Netflix, Prime Video, Peacock, and others, found that The Umbrella Academy topped all other shows in the streaming universe this week.

For the week ending August 14, the top 10 TV shows according to Reelgood were:

  1. The Umbrella Academy (Netflix)
  2. A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder (Netflix)
  3. Presumed Innocent (Apple TV+)
  4. House of the Dragon (HBO/Max)
  5. Industry (HBO/Max)
  6. Bad Monkey (Apple TV+)
  7. Time Bandits (Apple TV+)
  8. The Bear (FX/Hulu)
  9. Evil (Paramount+)
  10. Batman: Caped Crusader (Prime Video)

One standout is Apple TV+’s newly debuted Bad Monkey. Created by Bill Lawrence — the same mind behind Apple hits like Ted Lasso and Shrinking, as well as NBC’s ScrubsBad Monkey stars Vince Vaughn in a unique, tight, and humorous series. Vaughn plays Andrew Yancy, a wisecracking, fast-talking character who ends up working as a health inspector in the Florida Keys after being dismissed from the Miami Police Department.

Based on the 2013 novel by Carl Hiaasen, Bad Monkey starts with a tourist fisherman discovering a severed arm floating in the water, middle finger extended thanks to rigor mortis. Yancy sees an opportunity to solve a crime that could get him reinstated in the police department, provided he can navigate through a trove of Floridian oddballs and one bad monkey. It’s a fun, different, and somewhat edgy addition to Apple TV+’s lineup.
