SpongeBob SquarePants and Sandy Cheeks are set for an adventurous mission to save Bikini Bottom. Ahead of the movie’s premiere next month, Netflix has released the first trailer for “Saving Bikini Bottom: The Sandy Cheeks Movie.” The trailer shows SpongeBob and Sandy leaving the ocean and heading for Texas in a bid to save their underwater home.

In April 2023, it was confirmed that “Saving Bikini Bottom: The Sandy Cheeks Movie” was in the works. The film follows Sandy, SpongeBob, and Patrick as they attempt to rescue their cherished town, which has been scooped out of the ocean by B.O.O.T.S. Marine Biology Lab. According to the official synopsis, “when Bikini Bottom and all its denizens are suddenly scooped out of the ocean, Sandy Cheeks and SpongeBob SquarePants journey to Texas to save the town from a villainous plot.”

The film features a mix of 3D computer animation and live-action photography. Carolyn Lawrence and Tom Kenny return to voice Sandy and SpongeBob, continuing their roles from the long-running cartoon series. The voice cast also includes Clancy Brown, Bill Fagerbakke, Rodger Bumpass, and Mr. Lawrence, reprising their roles as Mr. Krabs, Patrick Star, Squidward Tentacles, and Plankton. Wanda Sykes joins the cast as the live-action villain Sue Nahmee, along with Matty Cardarople, Ilia Isorelýs Paulino, Johnny Knoxville, Craig Robinson, and Grey DeLisle.

“Saving Bikini Bottom” is the latest addition to the beloved SpongeBob SquarePants franchise. The original series debuted on Nickelodeon in 1999 and continues to air, with the 14th season concluding this month. The franchise has spawned several movies, including “The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie” (2004), “The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water” (2015), and “The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge on the Run” (2020). There are also spin-off series such as “Kamp Koral: SpongeBob’s Under Years” and “The Patrick Star Show.”

In addition to “Saving Bikini Bottom,” there are two more movies in production. Netflix is working on “The Plankton Movie,” slated for release next year. Paramount has announced “The SpongeBob Movie: Search for SquarePant,” which will premiere on December 19, 2025.

“Saving Bikini Bottom” is directed by Liza Johnson, known for her work on “Dead to Me” and “Silicon Valley.” The teleplay is written by SpongeBob SquarePants veterans Kaz and Tom Stern. The film is scheduled to premiere on Netflix on August 2.
