Travis Kelce, Patrick Mahomes escort Morgan Wallen in Chiefs jersey at Arrowhead

Travis Kelce and Patrick Mahomes joined country singer Morgan Wallen as he took the stage at Arrowhead Stadium on Friday.

Before returning to the football field next month, the Kansas City Chiefs star duo escorted Wallen as he prepared to perform for fans at the home of the Super Bowl champions.

While the quarterback and tight end were in casual attire, Wallen sported a red Chiefs jersey to honor the team.

However, fans had mixed feelings about the singer wearing the No. 7 jersey, a number worn by the controversial kicker Harrison Butker.

In May, Butker had prompted controversy by urging men to ‘fight against cultural emasculation’ and claiming women are destined to be ‘homemakers’ during a commencement speech at Benedictine College.

Butker’s speech included his conservative views not just on gender roles but also on abortion and vaccines.

As a result, many fans were outraged and protested against his statements. Tennis legend Serena Williams also took a jab at Butker during the ESPYs in a segment that honored female athletes.

While photos from the concert circulated, comments about Wallen’s number choice were divided.

“I was ready to go to the car but he redeemed himself w Pat and Travis,” one user wrote. Another added, “Love how he’s reppin Butker!”

Wallen is no stranger to controversy either. He faced backlash in 2021 when a video surfaced of him using a racial slur. However, another perspective of his performance at Arrowhead revealed that the jersey he wore didn’t belong to Butker.

The same user who posted the picture of Wallen with Kelce and Mahomes also shared a shot from behind him on stage, clarifying that it wasn’t Butker’s jersey but rather one with Wallen’s own name on the back.

It’s unclear why Wallen chose the number 7, but it could be a nod to his song “7 Summers” from 2020.

Kelce, Mahomes, and the team are now back in training after an eventful summer.

The Chiefs will begin their title defense quest on September 5 against the Baltimore Ravens at Arrowhead.
