Trump ‘lacks self-control’ as Harris gains momentum, says veteran observer

Donald Trump seems to be struggling to maintain his composure in the face of rising competition from Democratic presidential nominee Kamala Harris. This observation was made by veteran political journalist Maggie Haberman during her appearance on CNN’s The Situation Room with Wolf Blitzer on Friday.

During the segment, Haberman was shown a clip of Trump calling into Fox News following Harris’s acceptance speech at the Democratic National Convention. In the clip, it appeared that Trump was inadvertently pressing buttons on his phone as he criticized Harris.

Wolf Blitzer pointed out that Trump not only called Fox News but also reached out to the smaller network Newsmax. He then questioned Haberman about what these interviews reveal regarding Trump’s state of mind.

Former President Barack Obama took the opportunity to poke fun at Trump’s fixation on crowd sizes during the DNC. Meanwhile, Michelle Obama also made remarks directly aimed at Trump.

According to Haberman, “Both of the Obamas’ speeches got under his skin. He is very sensitive to what they say. This reaction is not new; it dates back to 2011 when Trump circulated the unfounded claim that President Obama might have been born in Kenya, questioning his legitimacy.” Haberman speculated that Trump’s sensitivity might lead to more outbursts in the future.

While on the call with Fox News, Trump seemed particularly irked by a question posed by host Martha MacCallum. She mentioned the considerable appeal Harris has generated among women voters and her efforts to attract young, Hispanic, and Black voters. Polls indicated that Harris was seeing some success in those demographics, prompting MacCallum to ask, “What’s your strategy to regain the momentum you had with those voters?”

Trump responded assertively, stating, “No, she’s not having success, I’m having success.” He asserted that he was performing well among Hispanic and Black voters, claiming to lead in polls across “almost every” key battleground state.

Defensively, he added, “No, it’s only in your eyes that they have that, Martha.” Such comments underline the aggressive stance Trump has taken as he seeks to bolster his public image in the wake of Harris’s ascendance.

This back-and-forth highlights the intense political rivalry that is emerging as the 2024 election cycle heats up. With Harris stepping into the spotlight, her ability to galvanize support among key voter demographics presents a significant challenge to Trump’s campaign efforts. Political analysts are paying close attention to how he navigates these challenges, particularly amid heightened scrutiny.

As the campaign continues, the dynamics between Trump and Harris, as well as the former president’s interactions with other political figures, will be closely monitored. Trump’s reactions and strategies in the face of this evolving political landscape will undoubtedly influence his standing and voter engagement in the months ahead.
