Ukraine Celebrates Independence Anniversary Amid Moscow-Kyiv POW Exchange

How the prisoner swap could impact U.S.-Russia relations 05:44

On Saturday, Russia and Ukraine participated in a significant prisoner exchange, releasing over 100 individuals as part of the ongoing conflict between the two nations. This event coincided with Ukraine commemorating the third Independence Day since the beginning of Russia’s full-scale invasion.

According to Ukrainian authorities, 115 servicemen were freed in this exchange, many of whom had been conscripted and captured during the early months of the conflict. Notably, the group included nearly 50 soldiers taken by Russian forces from the Azovstal steelworks during the siege of Mariupol.

The Russian Defense Ministry reported that the 115 soldiers it received were captured in the Kursk region, where Ukrainian forces had recently launched a surprise offensive. The soldiers are currently in Belarus but will be transported to Russia for medical care and rehabilitation.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy acknowledged the United Arab Emirates for facilitating the exchange, describing it as the 55th such instance since Russia’s invasion in February 2022. Zelenskyy shared images showing emaciated soldiers wrapped in Ukrainian flags, highlighting the emotional toll of their captivity.

In his post, he emphasized, “We remember each and every one. We are searching and doing our best to get everyone back.”

Negotiations between the two countries appear to occur primarily around the swapping of prisoners and the deceased. However, both sides refrain from disclosing the total number of prisoners held by either side.

The United Nations has reported that many Ukrainian prisoners of war (POWs) face severe mistreatment and medical neglect during their confinement. Also noted are isolated accounts of Russian soldiers facing abuse, particularly during their capture and transfer to detention facilities.

In January, a notable exchange saw hundreds of prisoners being released in a single operation, marking one of the most significant exchanges of the conflict.

Two years ago, on Independence Day, a tragic event unfolded as Russian forces conducted a rocket attack on a train station in Ukraine, resulting in 22 casualties. Zelenskyy had previously cautioned that Moscow might carry out something particularly cruel on this day.

This attack occurred in Chaplyne, a small town in the Dnipropetrovsk region, and was part of a series of strikes, including one that claimed the life of an 11-year-old child earlier that same day.

As the conflict continues, Russian forces also conducted shelling in southern Ukraine, resulting in fatalities and injuries. Local authorities reported that two individuals were killed and four others injured, including a baby, in the Kherson region on Saturday.

Ukraine’s air force successfully intercepted and destroyed several drones in the southern regions, while Russian bombers targeted Snake Island with cruise missiles. Conversely, Russia’s Defense Ministry claimed to have downed seven drones during an overnight operation.

The situation remained tense in several regions bordering Ukraine, with local officials reporting drone-related incidents causing injuries and damage to infrastructure.

On the occasion of its 33rd Independence Day, Ukraine is facing the grim reality of the ongoing war, marking a 30-month period of conflict against Russian aggression. Although no formal celebrations were planned, the day was observed to remember the lives lost.

Polish President Andrzej Duda showed support by traveling to Kyiv, symbolizing continued solidarity from one of Ukraine’s key allies. His visit also highlighted Poland’s role as a major supplier of arms and refuge for Ukrainians fleeing the war.

This relationship, however, has been complicated by earlier tensions over grain trade and historical grievances, but Poland’s ongoing support remains crucial for Ukraine as the conflict endures.
