Umbrella Academy Boss Explains Why [Spoiler] Was Absent in Final Season

The following post contains spoilers for The Umbrella Academy ‘s complete fourth and final season.

Luther Hargreeves may have regained his superpowers and bulging muscles in the final season of The Umbrella Academy, but the loss of his wife, Sloane, remained irrevocable.

The six-episode swan song of the Netflix drama dropped on Thursday. Unfortunately, it concluded without resurrecting Sloane (played by Genesis Rodriguez), the Sparrow whom Luther (Tom Hopper) fell in love with and married in the previous third season.

At the end of Season 3, Sir Reginald’s attempt to reprogram the universe was interrupted by Allison, transporting the Umbrella Academy siblings to a half-formed world where they no longer had their powers. Luther, who had died just minutes before the universe was reset, ultimately came back to life in this new world. Meanwhile, Sloane, who was alive when the universe was reprogrammed, disappeared entirely when the new world was created. She never reappeared in Season 4, and according to showrunner Steve Blackman, this was a matter of logistics.

“I never got to do the Luther-Sloane storyline that I wanted to do this season,” Blackman revealed. He explained that the shorter episode count of just six episodes, compared to the usual ten, impacted the narrative. “I wanted Sloane to be alive but not remember Luther, and for him to try to make her love him again. For logistical reasons, we just couldn’t make it work. We just couldn’t make it happen.”

Despite the lack of closure, Tom Hopper wasn’t too disappointed. He admitted that the storyline felt “incomplete” but accepted the situation. “There’s an element where it’s never really mentioned [throughout Season 4],” he said. “What happened to her?”
