‘Umbrella Academy’ Siblings Confront the Final Timeline

The Hargreeves siblings are making their much-anticipated return in the fourth and final season of “The Umbrella Academy,” premiering on Thursday, Aug. 8, on Netflix. Stripped of their superpowers and confronted by new adversaries who wish to eliminate them, the siblings are in for their most challenging season yet.

Now relegated to mere mortals and feeling the impending pressure from encroaching enemies, the Hargreeves have no clue what fate has in store for them in this season’s 10 episodes. Past events such as time jumps and resulting paradoxes continue to affect their current timeline. Compounding their woes, a new faction, known as The Keepers, emerges, casting doubt on their own reality and foreseeing a looming day of reckoning.

Together once more, the previously estranged superhero siblings find themselves immersed in bizarre situations brought on by past events. The Hargreeves, spontaneously born on the same day to different mothers across the globe, were adopted and raised by Sir Reginald Hargreeves (Colm Feore, “For All Mankind”) at the Umbrella Academy. Each sibling boasts unique powers.

Elliot Page (“Tales of the City”) stars as Viktor, who can manipulate soundwaves. Tom Hopper (“Black Sails”) appears as Luther, endowed with super strength and a history as an astronaut. David Castaneda (“Most Dangerous Game”) plays Diego, who is telekinetic. Emmy Raver-Lampman (“The Beekeeper,” 2024) portrays Allison, whose power lies in shaping reality through her well-placed rumors. Robert Sheehan (“Misfits”) is Klaus, a medium who communicates with the dead. Aidan Gallagher (“Nicky, Ricky, Dicky & Dawn”) features as the time-jumping Five, while Justin H. Min (“Beef”) plays Ben, renowned for his intimidating tentacles.

This season introduces David Cross (“You Hurt My Feelings,” 2023) as Sy Grossman, a desperate family man on the hunt for his daughter. Ritu Arya (“Feel Good”) also returns as Lila Pitts, who mirrors the abilities of others. Though not raised with the Hargreeves, Lila has joined the reunited siblings as an adult.

Season four sees the return of Ben, who died during one of the siblings’ previous missions. He initially appeared only to Klaus as a ghost. However, in an alternate timeline, the rest of the Hargreeves encountered him as a member of another superhero family, the Sparrow Academy. Now reunited in the same timeline, the siblings are puzzled by their inability to recall any concrete memories about Ben’s death.

As new threats emerge, the siblings must band together to confront their challenges. Among the new cast members are real-life married couple Nick Offerman (“Parks and Recreation”) and Megan Mullally (“Party Down”), portraying Drs. Gene and Jean Thibedeau, two Midwestern community college professors teaching a radical curriculum. The Thibedeaus have managed to piece together the puzzle of the Hargreeves’ time-jumping chaos and are eager to share their theories with anyone willing to believe their reality is a fabrication. In the trailer, Gene declares, “That tentacle boy is the key to understanding all the timelines,” highlighting Ben as a central figure.

Fans have been teased with Easter egg-filled posters, episode titles, exciting trailers, and even a glimpse of the season premiere’s script. Despite this, the cast and crew have remained tight-lipped about upcoming events. In a March interview with RadioTimes, Page revealed, “I’m not allowed to say anything, but it’s gonna be, as per usual, very fun, classic Hargreeves chaos and hijinks.”
