UN and family urge probe into U.S. woman’s shooting death in West Bank

September 7 – The United Nations is now urging a comprehensive investigation into the tragic death of 26-year-old Aysenur Ezgi Eygi, an American woman shot by Israeli forces during a demonstration in the West Bank earlier this week.

Eygi’s family issued a statement on Saturday, demanding an independent inquiry into her death. They expressed gratitude for the White House’s condolences but emphasized that an Israeli investigation would not suffice given the nature of her killing.

“We call on President Biden, Vice President Harris, and Secretary of State Blinken to mandate an independent investigation into the unlawful killing of a U.S. citizen, ensuring full accountability for all responsible parties,” they stated.

In a regular briefing on Friday, Stéphane Dujarric, spokesperson for the U.N. Secretary-General, acknowledged that he had not been briefed on the specifics of the case but reiterated the necessity of an inquiry.

“I hadn’t heard of this case. We indeed want to see a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding it, as civilians must be protected at all times,” Dujarric told reporters during his daily briefing. He noted that this was the first he had heard of the incident and promised to gather more information.

Eygi, a dual American and Turkish citizen, was shot in the head while participating in a weekly demonstration against settlement expansions in Beita, located south of Nablus in the West Bank.

Israeli forces later confirmed their troops fired shots into a crowd, stating that the use of force was a defensive measure. Eygi was transported to a local hospital after being struck but sadly succumbed to her injuries.

The White House National Security Council spokesman, Sean Savett, confirmed on Friday that they had reached out to the Israeli government requesting more information about the incident and seeking an investigation.

The International Solidarity Movement, an advocacy group, reported that since 2020, 17 Palestinian protesters have been killed in Beita, highlighting ongoing tensions in the area.

Eygi’s death has sparked international condemnation and calls for accountability. The U.N. has consistently advocated for the protection of civilians amidst the ongoing Israeli-Palestinian conflict, making it clear that incidents such as this warrant thorough scrutiny.
