Unplug and Relax: 5 TV Shows Perfect for Disconnection

Keeping up with politics can be exhausting. Sometimes, you just need to give your mind, body, and spirit a break from it all. Recognizing this, EBONY has introduced “Power Down,” a chance to dive into enjoyable activities that let you escape from the political noise and recharge. This way, you can come back refreshed and ready to make the informed decisions that guide our country.

If your TV and social media feeds are flooded with attack ads and election prediction polls, it might be time to hit the pause button. Instead, consider tuning into this lineup of new and returning shows, from tales of camaraderie to a fresh legal drama with a charming new lead.

A new character is making waves on the Seine! Thalia Besson joins the fourth season as Genevieve, Laurent’s daughter from a past relationship. Genevieve moves from New York City to Paris to launch her career and quickly becomes Emily’s new confidante. While it’s taken time, it’s exciting to finally see a Black woman navigate this lighthearted and fun series set in France.

And you thought your friendships were complicated. As Jax Stewart works to get her life back on track, one of her closest friends confesses to killing her husband. Winning this case will require more than a self-defense claim, so Jax enlists an ambitious defense attorney. “Jax has learned that she can’t do it all, and she’s having to make some adjustments,” star Emayatzy Corinealdi tells EBONY. “She’s trying to traverse this new terrain,” which includes Morris Chestnut as the new hotshot defense attorney. That’s more than enough reason to “power down” and tune in.

This reboot of the classic 1989 film stars Nathalie Emmanuel as Zee, a feared assassin in Paris’s underworld known as the “Queen of the Dead.” Zee’s decision to spare a young blind woman disrupts her alliances and attracts the attention of a savvy police investigator, played by Omar Sy. “You should watch The Killer for the genius of OG [director] John Woo and exciting action grounded in a heartfelt human story,” says Emmanuel, adding, “Not to mention the combined badassery of the incomparable Omar and myself.” That’s a collision we’re eager to watch.

Hosted and executive-produced by P-Valley star Nicco Annan—your favorite uncle—this documentary series takes viewers on an enthralling journey through the Deep South, filled with grit, joy, and magic. “Anytime we have a moment to celebrate ourselves and our triumphs, it’s important to note and share it with those behind us, those to come,” Annan tells EBONY. “The benefit of doing things on film is it allows us to archive it. Many people think our existence is void of joy and sensuality. We have sensuality in our emotional, spiritual, and physical beings, and all can see it. Marginalized communities should be documented intentionally, and I believe we did that with care.”

“Fine Man Fall” kicks off with the return of your favorite quartet, bonded by sharing the last name Johnson. The fourth season introduces a wedding to this dramedy that explores self-discovery, love, brotherhood, and evolving relationship dynamics between the sexes from a Black man’s perspective.
