In a remarkable turn of events at the US Open, Jessica Pegula achieved a stunning upset by defeating tournament favorite Iga Swiatek. Earlier this month, Pegula shared her thoughts on Coco Gauff, a player she frequently competes with in doubles matches. Pegula noted the significant growth and maturity Gauff has exhibited over recent years.

“I think she has definitely grown up a lot and matured over the last few years,” Pegula said, as reported by The Tennis Gazette. Her reflections highlighted the transformative journey young athletes undergo as they navigate their careers.

Pegula, who is ten years older than Gauff, emphasized that maturity can positively influence a player’s performance. “She’s now much more sure of herself and knows what she wants. Also, she is hitting that age where you are learning all that stuff,” she stated.

She continued, “You are trying to figure out what you want, how you want it, making more of your own decisions, and we have seen that over the past year now.” These insights reflect Pegula’s admiration for Gauff’s evolving game and confidence on the court.

The last tournament they played together was at the Paris Olympics, where they were eliminated in the second round of competition. Despite the setback, they remain strong competitors on the circuit.

Pegula’s journey in the US Open marks an exciting moment in her career. It has been a fruitful competition for American players, reminiscent of the last time such a number of players reached the semifinals in 2003. That year saw Andy Roddick claim the title alongside fellow American tennis icons Andre Agassi, Lindsay Davenport, and Jennifer Capriati.

Pegula’s victory over Swiatek secured her first Grand Slam semifinal spot, a significant achievement for someone who has dedicated many years to her professional tennis career. After her match, Pegula shared her relief and excitement, stating, “So many freaking times I’ve been losing.”

She credited her win in part to capitalizing on errors made by Swiatek. “I was able to take advantage of some things she wasn’t doing well,” Pegula explained, showcasing her tactical approach to the match.

As she prepares for her semifinal match scheduled for tonight at 8:15 pm ET, Pegula looks forward to the challenge against Muchova. Her journey throughout this tournament illustrates her tenacity and growth as an athlete.
