Usher Kicks Off Past Present Future Tour in D.C. After Neck Injury Delay

Usher kicked off his “Past Present Future” tour this week with two sold-out shows on Tuesday and Wednesday in Washington, D.C. at the Capital One Arena.

The 45-year-old, eight-time Grammy winner had previously planned to perform in Atlanta on August 14 but had to miss three concerts due to a neck injury he sustained while preparing for the shows.

“My hope was that with physical therapy and medical treatment, I would be able to overcome the injury and be ready for opening night,” stated Usher, whose full name is Usher Raymond IV, on social media on August 15.

At that time, the “Yeah!” singer mentioned that his neck injury had “not healed yet” and doctors advised him “not to perform any shows.”

Usher is set to make up for the postponed shows in Atlanta at the State Farm Arena on December 9, 10, and 12.

Usher’s performances in Washington, D.C. lasted two hours and featured songs like “Lovers and Friends,” “Confessions,” “Yeah!,” and “U Don’t Have To Call,” according to People.

He also performed tracks from his latest album “Coming Home,” released this past February, the outlet reported.

On Wednesday’s show, Usher was joined on stage by Washington, D.C.-based music stars such as Wale, Raheem DeVaughn, and Sugar Bear of EU, according to the magazine.

Usher and Wale teamed up for the songs “No Hands” and “The Matrimony,” while he performed “You” with DeVaughn and “Da’ Butt” with Sugar Bear.

A review by Variety’s Shaheem Reid noted that Usher effectively showcased various “eras of his career” using “an elaborate cube comprised of several huge LED screens that could display a large image or smaller ones on different screens.”

The cube also functioned “as a gigantic set-piece,” creating settings like a penthouse, a room resembling a house, a strip club, or a dance performance area.

Reid remarked that Usher “did not seem like a man with a neck injury” but rather “someone in top physical condition” as he performed the high-energy, physically demanding show.

Usher has additional concerts scheduled for Friday and Saturday at the CFG Bank Arena in Baltimore.
