Venice Film Festival Announces Full Lineup

The official lineup of the upcoming Venice Film Festival was announced today at 11 a.m. CET by artistic director Alberto Barbera and the new president of the fest’s parent organization, the Venice Biennale, Pietrangelo Buttafuoco.

As previously revealed, Tim Burton’s “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice,” starring Michael Keaton, Winona Ryder, Catherine O’Hara, Justin Theroux, Monica Bellucci, Jenna Ortega, and Willem Dafoe, is set as the out-of-competition opener. This promises to be one of the Lido’s most star-studded editions in recent memory.

Recent reports indicate that Spanish auteur Pedro Almodóvar is aiming for a competition spot with “The Room Next Door,” his English-language feature debut starring Julianne Moore and Tilda Swinton. Other predicted entries include “Joker 2” with Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga; Pablo Larraín’s “Maria,” a biopic of famed opera singer Maria Callas starring Angelina Jolie; and Luca Guadagnino’s “Queer,” featuring a love story between Daniel Craig and “Outer Banks” breakout Drew Starkey.

This year’s international jury will be led by acclaimed French actor Isabelle Huppert. The jurors include James Gray, known for “Ad Astra”; Andrew Haigh of “All of Us Strangers”; Agnieszka Holland with “Green Border”; Kleber Mendonça Filho, the name behind “Bacurau”; Abderrahmane Sissako, known for “Bamako”; Giuseppe Tornatore of “Cinema Paradiso”; Julia von Heinz, who directed “Treasure”; and Zhang Ziyi from “Memoirs of a Geisha.”

The Venice Film Festival’s 81st edition will take place from August 28 to September 7.

The complete lineup will be unveiled as it is announced.
