The lineup for the 81st Venice International Film Festival is finally unveiled. Artistic director Alberto Barbera and Biennale president Pietrangelo Buttafuoco have presented the complete list of titles early on Tuesday, July 23.

This year’s festival will run from August 28 to September 7. The competition jury will be chaired by Isabelle Huppert and includes directors like James Gray, Andrew Haigh, Agnieszka Holland, Kleber Mendonça Filho, Abderrahmane Sissako, Giuseppe Tornatore, and Julia von Heinz, along with Chinese actress Zhang Ziyi. The various sections announced will span across competition titles, out-of-competition films and TV, documentaries, and the Orizzonti (Horizons) section. Venice has also revealed its Immersive lineup for 2024.

The announcement comes on the heels of a busy week for festivals, as Toronto unveiled its galas and special presentations on Monday. Venice is known for prioritizing world premieres. The TIFF announcement eliminated some films that could have premiered in Italy, including Mike Leigh’s “Hard Truths,” Gia Coppola’s “The Last Showgirl,” Angelina Jolie’s “Without Blood,” and Edward Berger’s “Conclave,” which is also set to premiere at Telluride.

The coveted Golden Lion for Best Film and other awards will be presented during the closing ceremony on September 7 at the Sala Grande of the Palazzo del Cinema at the Venice Lido. Sigourney Weaver will receive the Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement on opening night, where Tim Burton’s “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice” will make its world premiere.

Last year’s Golden Lion went to “Poor Things,” which later won four Oscars, including Best Actress for Emma Stone. Last year’s festival lacked many movie stars and writers due to ongoing strikes. This year, there is an anticipated surge of Hollywood talent, from both behind and in front of the camera, mingling with fans from water taxis, and introducing their films at screenings and press conferences.

The 2024 Venice International Film Festival lineup includes:
