Veteran Talent Booker Theresa Chambers for Mercury Lounge, Bowery Ballroom, Dies at 64

Theresa Chambers, a prominent talent booker associated with the Mercury Lounge, Bowery Ballroom, and other renowned venues, passed away on August 11th. Confirmed by a family representative, no cause of death has been disclosed. She was 64 years old.

“Theresa was one of a kind,” expressed Steve Ferguson, an agent at Paladin Artists. “Always fighting for her beliefs and her acts. And that infectious laugh! I will truly miss her.”

A native of New York City, Chambers began her career in the early ’80s as an assistant to Steve Rubell at the legendary Studio 54 in Manhattan. Through the years, she made significant contributions at the APA agency and as a talent booker for Ron Delsener Presents.

Over the last three decades, Chambers cemented her legacy as the founding booker for iconic New York venues including the Bowery Ballroom, the Mercury Lounge, Fez, and BB Kings. These venues became the launching pads for many rising rock acts during that era. Chambers was well-known among these artists, even as they ascended to superstardom. In recognition of her achievements, she was named talent buyer of the year at the Pollstar Awards in 1999.

In addition to her work as a talent booker, Chambers managed acts such as Ireland’s Hothouse Flowers and rock band Something Happens. Her diverse career also included collaborations with David Bowie, Herbie Hancock, the Sugarcubes, and Sinead O’Connor in various capacities.

Chambers is survived by her children, Ryan, James, and Anna, as well as her brothers Christopher, Paul, and Daniel, and her Aunt Colleen.

The family is planning a memorial service for later in the year, with further announcements to be made in due course. For more information, contact Dave Lory at [email protected].
