Vote: Best ’90s Punk Revival Band

Who is the better ’90s punk revival band – Green Day or The Offspring? That’s the fiery debate taking place this week on Loudwire Nights‘ Chuck’s Fight Club.

Punk rock wasn’t just confined to the ’70s. However, by the 1990s, it had largely faded from the rock spotlight. That changed dramatically in 1994, right amidst the grunge era’s peak, when two California bands thrust punk rock back into the limelight.

Green Day, a trio from the Bay Area, had already built some buzz with two indie records when Reprise Records signed them. Their third album, Dookie, released in 1994, turned out to be a massive hit. The album generated five major hits including “Longview,” “Basket Case,” “Welcome to Paradise,” “When I Come Around,” and “She.” The momentum didn’t stop there, as the band went on to dominate the ’90s with additional albums and hits such as “J.A.R.,” “Geek Stink Breath,” “Brain Stew,” “Hitchin’ a Ride,” “Good Riddance (Time of Your Life),” “Redundant,” and “Nice Guys Finish Last.”

Conversely, in the same year, Orange County’s The Offspring followed a similar path. After two albums with Epitaph, they made the jump to a major label and released Smash in 1994. Tracks like “Come Out and Play,” “Self Esteem,” and “Gotta Get Away” ruled the airwaves. The band’s success continued through the ’90s with two more albums and numerous hits including “All I Want,” “Gone Away,” “Pretty Fly (For a White Guy),” “Why Don’t You Get a Job,” “The Kids Aren’t Alright,” and “She’s Got Issues.”

So, which California punk band tops your list? As part of Chuck’s Fight Club battles, Loudwire Nights host Chuck Armstrong kicks off the contest at 8 PM during Monday’s episode.
