Warners Cancels Release of Genndy Tartakovsky’s ‘Fixed’

Warner Bros./New Line has decided not to release Sony Pictures Animation’s adult animated comedy “Fixed,” directed and written by Genndy Tartakovsky, Variety has learned. The distribution rights now revert back to Sony Pictures Animation (SPA), which is currently exploring a new distribution strategy for the film.

The decision to drop a Tartakovsky project is surprising given his long history of success with Warner Bros. Discovery. Tartakovsky, a major figure behind Cartoon Network’s early and enduring success, created famous shows such as “Dexter’s Laboratory,” “Samurai Jack,” “Star Wars: Clone Wars,” and “Primal.” He also produced “The Powerpuff Girls.” In 2022, he signed an exclusive, multi-year, cross-studio overall deal with Cartoon Network Studios and Warner Bros. Animation.

Tartakovsky has also had a significant impact with Sony. He directed the first three “Hotel Transylvania” films, which collectively grossed $1.38 billion globally.

“Fixed” centers on Bull, a bloodhound who embarks on a bucket list adventure after learning he’s going to be neutered. The voice cast features Adam Devine as Bull, along with Idris Elba, Kathryn Hahn, Bobby Moynihan, Fred Armisen, Beck Bennett, Michaelle Bureau, and River Gallo. Michelle Murdocca, who collaborated with Tartakovsky on “Hotel Transylvania,” returns as producer.

While an adult animated comedy focusing on a dog’s adventures before being neutered may not have the broad appeal of family-friendly films like the “Hotel Transylvania” series, it is anticipated to find its audience, whether through a theatrical release or streaming platform.

Netflix is a potential candidate for picking up the distribution deal. Previous SPA titles like “Vivo,” “Wish Dragon,” and the Oscar-nominated “The Mitchells vs. The Machines” have found success through Netflix.

Representatives from Warner Bros. Discovery and Sony were contacted by Variety for comments.
