Was ‘1923’ Season 2 Canceled?

Yellowstone fans are eagerly awaiting the return of Season 5, and while there’s significant buzz about a sequel, there’s been less clarity about the prequel 1923.

Season 2 of 1923 was promised, but the Hollywood writers and Screen Actor’s Guild strikes have caused delays. The cast has moved on to other projects, and the show’s Instagram has become a collection of updates rather than new content.

Regarding Season 2 of 1923, there’s a mix of good, bad, and sad news.

• Harrison Ford and Helen Mirren are the most notable stars, but Brandon Sklenar (Spencer Dutton) and Julia Schlaepfer (Alexandra) emerged as standout actors from Season 1.
• Season 1 concluded with a surprising twist concerning royalty and an outsider controlling the Yellowstone ranch.
• Unfortunately, a key cast member passed away this year.

To recap the ending of Season 1, Alexandra and Spencer were en route to America when her ex-fiancé challenged Spencer to a duel and was killed. Sklenar’s character ended up on a dinghy, while Alexandra was detained on the ship because her father questioned their marriage, revealing she is the Countess of Sussex.

In Montana, Timothy Dalton’s Donald Whitfield had just paid the Dutton family’s taxes, giving him leverage over their property. Jacob Dutton (played by Ford) was regaining his strength after a severe injury but faced a thinning crew. John Dutton Jr. and his wife both perished in separate incidents, leaving Jack Dutton eager but possibly unprepared to fight the numerous challenges. Ranch foreman Zane faced his own troubles after lawmen beat him and arrested his wife for breaking anti-miscegenation laws, leaving the situation grim.

Season 2 of 1923 hasn’t been cancelled, but its air date remains uncertain. Early 2025 is the likely timeframe, given that filming is currently happening in Austin, Texas. Historically, prequels and sequels to Yellowstone have followed the main show. With the upcoming fifth season starting on November 10 and consisting of five to eight episodes, it’s reasonable to expect the prequel to return in the new year.

Sadly, Cole Brings Plenty, who played Pete Plenty Clouds and was becoming a love interest for Teonna, died in April. His cause of death has not been disclosed, and it’s unclear if his character will be recast or written out.

On a brighter note, other 1923 cast members have exciting news. Michelle Randolph, who plays Elizabeth, got a role in another Taylor Sheridan series, Landman. That show is already filmed and might premiere on Paramount+ before 1923 returns. Sebastian Roché, who plays Father Renaud, has a role in a Netflix show called Queen of Tears, which premiered in March.

Brandon Sklenar is set to star opposite Blake Lively in a film called It Ends With Us.

Two new actors are joining the cast for Season 2. Janet Montgomery from The Ex-Wife will play Hillary, described as a thoughtful woman who fights against injustice, and Jennifer Carpenter from Dexter will take on the role of Mamie Fossett, a highly capable U.S. Deputy Marshal.

The rest of the cast is expected to return for what is anticipated to be the final season of 1923.
