Watch ‘Chimp Crazy’: New Hit from ‘Tiger King’ Director — Now Streaming

Tiger King’s director, Eric Goode, has released a new docuseries called “Chimp Crazy,” and it’s just as wild as you might expect.

The latest creation from the filmmaker is a four-part series that delves into the case of Tonia Haddix, a former nurse from Florida who calls herself the “Dolly Parton of Chimps.” Haddix spends her days caring for wild animals in captivity and has frequent run-ins with the animal rights organization PETA and various authorities. When a court orders the removal of the chimps from Haddix’s care, all but one are retrieved. However, the desperate search for Tonka, a famous chimp who appeared in the film “Buddy” alongside actor Alan Cumming, ignites a chilling game of cat-and-mouse.

The first two episodes are streaming now.

With seven chimps under her care, including Tonka, Haddix is an exotic animal broker and the main focus of the series. The show also highlights other ‘chimp moms’ who form deep bonds with the chimps they possess. Their obsession often leads to the neglect of the chimps’ needs, and in some cases, abuse and deceit. Haddix even goes so far as to falsely proclaim that Tonka has died. The unsettling narrative includes interviews with Cumming, who considers Tonka a close friend and has offered a $10,000 reward to find the primate, matching a similar reward from PETA.

While exposing animal mistreatment is one of the director’s goals, the series offers an engrossing look into the complexities of human affection and the lengths some people will go to ‘protect’ those they love.
