Watch Kerry Washington in ‘The Six Triple Eight’

Netflix has released the first trailer for Tyler Perry’s upcoming wartime drama, The Six Triple Eight. The film is based on Kevin M. Hymel’s article "Fighting A Two-Front War," published in WWII History Magazine by Sovereign Media. It focuses on the first and only Women’s Army Corps unit of color to serve overseas in WWII. Starring Kerry Washington as Major Charity Adams, the movie is set to hit theaters on Dec. 6 before its debut on Netflix later that month.

Released on Wednesday, Aug. 28, the trailer showcases Washington’s character addressing a battalion of women soldiers, emphasizing that they "must be perfect." She asserts, "You do not have the luxury to be good; you have the burden to be better." As her all-women unit undergoes grueling training, she motivates them by saying, "I need women who had to fight to survive." Later in the trailer, she tells the unit, "I am giving you my best, and you will give me yours. A lot of people do not want us to succeed. We have the most to prove. Welcome to the Women’s Army Corp."

According to the official synopsis, the women of The Six Triple Eight faced racism, sexism, and harsh working conditions but remained committed to serving their country with honor and distinction. They were given an extraordinary mission and united in their determination, delivering hope and shattering barriers.

Tyler Perry shared the trailer on social media platform X, reflecting on the importance of the story. "You have no idea what it means to me to have been given the grace and the blessing to be able to tell THIS story! Every detail is dedicated to the memory of the 855 black women and women of color of the Six Triple Eight. When America needed hope, they delivered!" wrote Perry.

Kerry Washington also shared her thoughts with PEOPLE, expressing her pride in being part of the film. She commended Perry for his extraordinary job in taking this largely untold story and adapting it into a moving narrative work of art that allows viewers into the hearts and minds of these brave American heroes. Washington added that the movie resonates strongly with audiences because, although it is a historical drama, the themes in the film are still very relevant today.

The cast of The Six Triple Eight includes Ebony Obsidian, Milauna Jackson, Kylie Jefferson, Shanice Shantay, Sarah Jeffery, Pepi Sonuga, Moriah Brown, Jeanté Godlock, Jay Reeves, Jeffery Johnson, Baadja-Lyne Odums, Donna Biscoe, Gregg Sulkin, Scott Daniel Johnson, Susan Sarandon, Dean Norris, Sam Waterston, and Oprah Winfrey. Nicole Avant, Angi Bones, Tony L. Strickland, Keri Selig, and Carlota Espinosa join Perry as producers, with Peter Guber and Washington serving as co-executive producers.

The Six Triple Eight premieres in select theaters on Dec. 6 and will debut on Netflix on Dec. 20.
